Waleed Aly v Steve Price as Project heats up

Project host shuts down one of the show's regulars after heated discussion over environmentalists and the law.

An interview on The Project last night got a little hot under the collar when regular panelist Steve Price was shut down by host Waleed Aly.

The debate raged over proposed legislation to stop environmentalists mounting legal challenges against industry projects, such as coal mining.

While Price said litigation would cost Australian jobs, Aly defended that the law was working fine and had been reviewed under the Howard government.

But the conversation turned tense, with Price telling Aly, “You’ve got a job why shouldn’t the people who are going to work on those mines have a job?, “Go and build a few windmills then,” and Aly replying “I will get to a question Steve.”

“Oh will you?” asked Price.

Price has always been cast on the show to provide contrasting opinions and a bit of colour.

Last night it was a blue.

  1. Steve price is….and always has been in the media to create controversy…they are playing a game….and Price and Pickering were actually quite good mates. They would be loving this…..

  2. Price works for 2GB – ’nuff said. They all reflect the opinions of Alan Jones, Ray Hadley and, presumably, John Singleton. They’re worse than Murdoch’s rags. So, no surprises from Steve Price last night then.

  3. It was completely relevant to declare Steve Price’s wife’s role working for the Environment Minister and good on The Project for doing so. If Greg Hunt was involved in the government incompetence identified by the courts, then at the very least Steve’s wife has a financial and professional interest in cleaning up the mess.Viewers deserve to know that.

  4. I saw this ‘debate’ and although I knew Steve Price was a rightwing conservative cheerleader for the Liberal Party , I didn’t know his wife was Chief of Staff for Environment Minister Greg Hunt.

I think it was perfectly appropriate for the Project to disclose this information because Price – and his wife -were both obviously pro-coal mining and anti-environment/climate change.

Waleed hardly said a word during Price’s rant and he did the right thing by politely shutting down the rant.

No doubt Channel Ten bosses will be reviewing Waleed’s contract looking for a reason to sack him.

I truly believe this was the reason Charlie Pickering left the show. Pickering also had run ins with Price and we know Ten’s board is stacked with rightwing conservative LNP cheerleaders.

Agreed. Waleed actually showed what I consider a great deal of restraint. And of course Steve’s wife working for the incompetent minister that started all this mess deserves to be declared. As Waleed said, if the Government had followed the rules from the start, there would have been no issue. They expect others to do it, they should do so as well. Simples.

  5. Both he and Bickmore are shocking at interviews I’m surprised many people don’t tell The Project to take a flying when they are asked to interviews and why the shows “regulars” are reduced to network hacks and nobody’s.

  6. This was great TV. I don’t agree with media reports today that Steve Price was cut off though. Steve had plenty of air time and the interview ended as normal. This is the first time I have seen Waleed riled. Love The Project.

  7. Love a good debate and this show needs more of it….and these guys are the ones to offer that…..but to have a host and regular panelist have no respect one another try and steamroll the other does not help anyone. Price is a regular panelist, not a expert in the area. The project could not get anybody from the government to come onto the show but clearly needed somebody to interview….and to start the interview by declaring a family link is a bit tough. (they were not interviewing Price’s wife, they were interviewing a separate individual) Secondly, Waleed in a number of interviews has steamrolled the people he is interviewing to get his option accross. It is not all about Waleed. It is about both sides….so lets hear both sides. I can understand if somebody is not answering the question and waffling on about nothing….go get into ’em….but let the interviewer speak. Isn’t…

    1. In politics, it is very necessary to declare any links that could lead to bias. Otherwise, if not declared previously, it could lead to accusations of trying to manipulate the media. It’s similar to the way David will declare that he blogs for SBS during Eurovision when he writes Eurovision stories – it’s just the way the media works. To be upset by that is a bit petty and unprofessional – it’s standard practice.

  8. Price was perturbed coming into the interview because The Project made the disclosure that Price’s wife is CoS to the Environment Minister, Greg Hunt. Price didn’t think that relevant. So things kind of went downhill from there.

  9. Price has a reputation for turning on colleagues when on TV and radio. I remember about four years ago when he was on 2UE he was talking to the Canberra correspondent who made a point about current politics and Price exploded. An argument ensued and he cut her off. The following day there was a damaging write-up about it in Sydney Confidential in the Daily Telegraph. Shortly after that Price left 2UE to work on rival 2GB’s new station in Melbourne MTR.
