UK observational series Ladyboys, filmed in Thailand, is back for its third incarnation this week on ABC2, Ladyboys: The Band.

Not to be confused with What Really Happens in Thailand, this time the show asks, “What happens when a British boiler-fitter attempts to form a new pop group in Thailand – made up entirely of ladyboys?”

In Thailand, ladyboys are everywhere: men who transform themselves into women almost from head to toe. Their beauty is legendary: tourists from around the world are captivated, and a growing number of British men are ready to give up everything for life with a ladyboy.

This series looks beyond the glamorous ladyboy showgirls to find the real people striving to make it in a country where transgender women are celebrated, but still denied equal rights.

Since moving to the sunshine coast of Pattaya to live with his ladyboy fiancée, Paeng, 44-year-old British expat Scott has become a figurehead of the local ladyboy community. He plans to change their fortunes by forming a pop group comprised exclusively of ladyboys – a tall order for a man who knows nothing about music and who says that organising ladyboys is a little like herding cats.

Thankfully, Scott has teamed up with a fellow expat Brit who knows a thing or two about music: Barry Upton, the multi-platinum selling songwriter who created the global pop sensation Steps.

Together, Scott and Barry hold open auditions for ladyboy singers and are stunned by the vast array of voices, looks and talent. But can they find the talent they need and be ready to launch a single on live national television in just a matter of weeks?

9:10pm Friday ABC2
