A Current Affair deletes post on “cheap” Asian tradies

ACA acknowledges a junior social media staffer used poor wording in a call-out for interview subjects.

A Current Affair has deleted a social media post which asked for people to come forward with stories about using “cheap” Asian tradies.

“Have you had an experience with Asian tradies? Painters, tilers, plasterers… What did you think? Did they do a good job, were they cheap?” it asked.

Executive Producer Grant Williams has acknowledged the poor wording, posted by a junior social media employee, and ordered it be deleted.

“Sadly, a junior social media staffer, in good faith, put up a call-out on behalf of a reporter without having the copy approved,” he told Mumbrella.

“Of course the copy was inappropriate.”

But he also denied the story was being mooted to stitch up minorities, saying the story had come from him and his own experiences in renovating his property, on which he had employed Korean tradespeople.

“They actually market themselves as Korean painters,” Williams said.

“Importantly, the story is positive and there was no negativity or racial vilification intended. We weren’t saying ‘Korean tradies are crap – don’t go near Korean tradies’ we were saying that this was a good story – actually out of my personal experience – and that’s how it was first mooted.”

A 2013 story on an “All-Asian Mall” in Castle Hill was ruled by the Australian Communications and Media Authority to be a breach of the Commercial Code of Practice.

  1. Mentioning that shown tradies have all required insurances – how about running the video past Work Safe – one is high on the ladders with no one holding the ladders, the other one is standing on the roof of the garage without a harness … and when they get injured the system is going to fork out for their disabilities ….

And isn’t this country about certain lifestyle – where people work for about 8 hours and than spend some quality time with family, friends or help out in community … where people do not live in squalor on a cup of rice a day … in this country people work to live and not the other way round … or …

    Racism or not …

  2. I’m defo not a fan of ACA but I really can’t see the problem with this tweet, it is political correctness gone totes cray cray…. The junior was probably showing some initiative to impress in her role, which they probably won’t ever be able to do again….

      1. Ok, so by calling people of a specific background with the correct term is racism now??? Gee I must have missed that bus driven by the Icelandic bus driver….. Oooops I am racist!
