Foxtel fees for its basic package is rising from $25 a month to $26 month, its first rise in two years.

Fairfax, whose joint-owned SVOD service Stan competes directly with Foxtel’s joint-owned service Presto, claimed the lift had drawn reactions on social media. It notes the price lift at a time when Foxtel has lost the rights to the English Premier League.

A Foxtel spokesman said: “Foxtel has had no price rises for two years, and 18 months ago people either had a price reduction or were given significantly more content for the same price.

“So the fact that there has now been a small price rise is normal business practice.”

“There has been some reaction on social media definitely but we reckon a few hundred comments or mentions on a base off close to 3 million customers is what one would normally expect in these circumstances.”

  1. I got the email about the price rise, read it was $1, thought nothing of such an insignificant price rise and deleted the email. I dare say most subscribers will feel the same.

  2. And they won’t buy the rights to the NHRA. It’s all to cover the exorbitant TV rights fees they pay to the NRL, AFL and ARU. With 3 million subscribers do the math.

Yet they won’t pay their sister company Fox Sports US for the rights to show the NHRA.

  3. Do what we have just done, cancel Foxtel, will miss Walking Dead but will buy the series for $50,other than that, think about it what is really any good anymore on Foxtel ..

  4. Coming off the back of lost sporting rights, multiple channel closures (Bio, V) and the only new channel being added in a long time being a NZ shopping channel, this will be a bitter pill to swallow. Especially when much content can be found elsewhere without the high fees.
