Reality TV casting secrets

What do My Kitchen Rules, MasterChef, The Voice and The Bachelor look for first in their casting?

2016-05-21_0115

My Kitchen Rules looks for personality first, MasterChef looks for cooking skills, The Voice had 8000 video auditions, and The Bachelor scouts bars and singles nights to find candidates.

These are some of the insights from a News Corp article on Reality TV show casting.

MKR contestants completed an online questionnaire, underwent interviews- first on video, then later on the phone- before eventually cooking for a producer at their home. It was the only time they cooked before they appearing on the show.

By contrast MasterChef looks at 500 applicants, and tests them with a mystery box, their signature dish, and producer interviews to reach the top 50 to appear before the judges.

  1. While Masterchef obviously attracts cooks of better quality, once that skill has been established, the same personality test must be applied. Masterchef focusses very heavily on the backstories (dead nonnas, anyone), and when there is an elimination where a relatively bland person is competing against one with a backstory (or clear marketability), the bland/normal person will leave, sometimes regardless of the quality of their cooking.
