Today show “live” in Perth?

It's nightfall on Today, but daybreak on Sunrise yet both are Live into Perth.

Perth viewers of the Today show must have been confused yesterday when a “Live” broadcast of a man protesting on a rooftop at Scarborough was seen in the dark at 8:14am.

Especially when he was also in morning sunlight at 8:14am on Sunrise.

When Nine crossed to the scene at 8:14am AEST it was 6:14am WST. But the programme played two hours later into WA with the “Live” marker still visible.

Sunrise had already wrapped around 9am AEST when it later served a Live news cross into Perth at 10:14am AEST, 8:14am WST.

The Scarborough deli owner is staging a rooftop protest to protest against demolition works which have encroached on the shop.

Making things even more confusing for Nine viewers is their local news bulletins which break into Today to avoid the very problem of stale news. But that would have meant viewers dipped in and out of sunlight between Today and Nine News Perth bulletins.

Nine was contacted for comment.

  1. The US has two separate TV feeds in operation – east coast and west coast (central US viewers tend to have to adjust their viewing habits to fit in with the east coast). All our networks need to do is remove the “live” watermark from shows that are delayed (oh, and Qld needs to move into the 21st century and adopt Daylight Savings!!!!).

  2. We have the same problem in Brisbane. The best way around it is to watch via the Internet by having your postcode set to Sydney, therefor you get the proper live broadcast.

    1. ABC News Breakfast ran live into QLD on the main ABCTV channel this past summer. And Nine for a while did run Today into QLD live before when it was only a 2 hour show from 0700 to 0900. QLD could easily go live during southern states daylight saving, running live from 0400 with the Nine Early News, then Today from 0430 to 0800, then continue live with Today Extra from 0800 to 1030, then stay live with Nine Morning News from 1030 to 1130, and have Nine Brisbane run their locally produced Morning News for an extra 30 mins starting from 1100 to 1200.

  3. I can’t see why we can’t have today & sunrise broadcast live into WA at 4am-7am then have a re-run of the delayed broadcast from 7am-9am.

  4. It’s not the first time this has happened. Shows like The X Factor, I’m a Celebrity, The Voice and DWTS are all promoted as “live” here in WA, when they are not. Celebrity even has the nerve to leave the “live” watermark on screen throughout the show.

In this day and age, I don’t see why we can’t have a channel that broadcasts live AEST across the country, then a second that’s time zone delayed. Problem solved.

  5. I agree perth should have local based sunrise and today. just on another issue anyone who could not get 7flix before will be able to get it now with it been changed over to normal sd signal. probably due to the olympics.

  6. News should be live no matter what. Perth should have local tailor made versions of both Today & Sunrise. In this day and age, nothing of a live news nature should be on delay anymore.
Ideally Perth should have Today and Sunrise live from the east coast at 03.30 and not run GMA & NBC Today, and stay live with the east coast version when it ends at 07.00am Perth time. And from 07.00 to 09.00 Perth time, either a live studio with Perth presenters fills that time or the Sydney studio continues on for Perth viewers only. But as both the Nine & Seven studios in Sydney are still in use for Today Extra & The Morning Show, it is about time Perth viewers got their own version of a locally produced Today/Sunrise 07.00 to 09.00 instead.

  7. So the today show is claiming exclusives when they are clearly not like with Dami Im and now claiming live broadcasts when they are not live . Why all this from the today show .they shouldn’t treat their viewers like mugs .thats why I watch ABC news breakfast no BS.
