Tomorrow night SBS premieres the 6 part murder drama The Secret which it has already been screening via SBS on Demand.

The 2016 Irish drama is based on a true story and also features Aussie Genevieve O’Reilly.

Celebrated actor James Nesbitt (Babylon, Cold Feet) plays Colin Howell, a respectable dentist and pillar of the community, who becomes a killer in partnership with a Sunday school teacher, Hazel Buchanan, played by Genevieve O’Reilly (Episodes, The Honourable Woman).

After meeting at their local Baptist Church in Coleraine, Northern Ireland, Hazel and Colin embark upon a passionate and destructive affair, climaxing in an elaborate murder plot to which their partners fall victim.

Based on a true story, The Secret tells the story of a real life murder entirely from the perspective of the killers. Yet despite getting away with it, Colin and Hazel do not escape the consequences of their actions.

9:30pm Wednesday on SBS.

  1. This sounds interesting, but forgive me for being a little dubious because it’s screening on SBS (not on ABC or a Foxtel drama channel).

    Anyone seen it?

    1. I watched it on SBS On Demand back in June right after reading David’s article and thoroughly enjoyed it. I like James Nesbitt and normally find him attractive but simply couldn’t while playing this character, so hats off to him for his performance! I never knew of the real life crime prior to reading about The Secret.
