Britain’s Channel 5 is celebrating 30 years of Neighbours broadcasts, where it began on the BBC in 1986.

Since 2008 the show has screened on Channel 5, where it has been running same day as Australia since January.

To mark the occasion a “super-special episode” is airing as part of a contest offering a trip for 2 to Australia, asking fans to count the number of Union Jacks they spy on screen.

Channel 5 Commissioner Greg Barnett said: “The UK has a special affection for Neighbours, and the opportunity to mark the 30th birthday of its first transmission with an exclusive competition, feels like a really special thing to do.

“The prize is as great as the storylines are currently, so I very much hope those people taking part in the competition have fun and become avid fans!”

Neighbours Executive Producer Jason Herbison added: “We couldn’t allow the 30th anniversary of our first transmission in the UK to pass by without some sort of celebration.

“We hope all our viewers on Channel 5 will join in the fun and enter the competition. We certainly had a great time planting the Union Jacks throughout the episode – how many can you find?”
