Mariah Carey has attracted headlines for her disastrous performance for New Year’s Eve at Times Square.

The Mariah’s World star appeared to be plagued by technical problems during Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest.

TIME notes she opened with a successful rendition of “Auld Lang Syne,” but when the music started playing for her next song, “Emotions,” she announced: “We can’t hear.”

While her background dancers carried on, the E! star gave up on singing, sashayed around the stage and threw out some commentary and explanation: “We didn’t have a sound check, but it’s New Year’s, baby. It’s OK, guys.” And later: “I want a holiday, too, can I not have one? I’m trying to be a good sport here.”

Her final song, “We Belong Together,” went slightly more as planned—because she was lip-syncing, as she seemed to admit at the beginning when she said, “This is the album version.” She could plainly be seen to lower her microphone and stop moving her mouth at points during the song, though the vocals continued.

“It just don’t get any better,” she mumbled before leaving the stage.

Social media was unforgiving, claiming her career as the final death of 2016. Ouch.

And to think 12 months earlier she was the New Year’s Eve act at Crown in Melbourne for James Packer.

Updated: Dick Clarke Productions, who produce New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, has rejected suggestions her performance was sabotaged.

“As the premier producer of live television events for nearly 50 years, we pride ourselves on our reputation and long-standing relationships with artists,” a statement read.

“To suggest that dcp, as producer of music shows including the American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, New Year’s Rockin’ Eve and Academy of Country Music Awards, would ever intentionally compromise the success of any artist is defamatory, outrageous and frankly absurd.

“In very rare instances there are of course technical errors that can occur with live television, however, an initial investigation has indicated that dcp had no involvement in the challenges associated with Ms. Carey’s New Year’s Eve performance. We want to be clear that we have the utmost respect for Ms Carey as an artist and acknowledge her tremendous accomplishments in the industry.”

  1. We’ve already lost so many great artists (Michael, Whitney, Prince, George) and I feel sad that this woman is slowly destroying all her good work/legacy while she’s still alive. What’s disappointing from this fiasco is she actually intended to lip sync her signature ‘dog whistle’. It was on the play back’ track while she was talking on stage. It makes you wonder if she had ever sung those difficult notes live in the last 10 years!!

  2. There was supposed to be a vocal playing during emotion but it didnt kick in, leaving mariah to actually sing live, but she clearly refused to do. It’s a shame as she probably could have pulled it off. Just made her look like a spoilt child rather than a good sport that she claimed to be.

  3. Hard to see what the excuse is, a technical-glitch related hiccup is forgivable. But to completely throw in the towel like that? There were plenty of opportunities to get back on the horse, a novice karaoke performance can pull it off, what is Mariahs excuse? stunt radar off the charts.

  4. “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest” is exactly what the Southpark gang would call a daggy family entertainment concert that they invented for their show.

I must admit that I’ve never understood Mariah Carey’s attraction as a singer and performer. She has a decent enough voice with a wide usable range but she over-sings so many of the notes.

  5. I can’t stand Mariah at all, but let’s face it, that was not her fault. What else could she have done? I know everything would have been timed to the second, but the tech guys should have pulled the audio and reset.
