Tony Awards 2017: guide

Kevin Spacey hosts -but will Bette Midler perform?

On Monday, Australian time Kevin Spacey will host the Tony Awards for the first time.

The House of Cards star is a former winner for Best Actor for Lost in Yonkers.

Leading the contenders is Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 with 12 nominations, Hello Dolly! with 10, Dear Evan Hansen with 9 and A Doll’s House Part 2 with 8.

Cate Blanchett is nominated for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play for The Present while Tim Minchin is up for Best Original Score for Groundhog Day.

A Special Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre will be awarded to two-time Tony Award winner James Earl Jones.

New York Times reports Josh Groban plans to lead the cast of “Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812” in a mash-up of the show’s ballad and its big dance number, Ben Platt expects to perform “Waving Through a Window,” from “Dear Evan Hansen.” The cast of revival “Falsettos,” will also perform.

But the big question is whether Bette Midler will perform from Hello, Dolly! which appears to be at an impasse. There is an issue with Radio City Music Hall’s staging being unsafe for the dancers, but producers have rejected a remote performance from the Shubert Theatre. Instead David Hyde Pierce is expected to perform a solo while Midler will present an award.
