Chris Uhlmann cops 1 week ban from Parliament press gallery

Nine’s political editor will be suspended from federal Parliament next week after Nine filmed Michaelia Cash texting staffers.

Nine’s political editor Chris Uhlmann will be suspended from federal Parliament next week after Nine News cameras got a shot of Michaelia Cash texting staffers about media scrutiny.

Uhlmann, who last year replaced Laurie Oakes, was forced to write to the Senate’s Usher of the Black Rod, who described it as a “particularly egregious breach of the rules”.

“I accept I broke the rules and I accept the umpires’ verdict,” Uhlmann said.

Uhlmann will be barred from parliament from Monday to Wednesday next week, while both the House of Representatives and the Senate are sitting.

In a separate ruling, Nine’s bureau chief in Canberra, Doug Ferguson, was also suspended for two days next week after after Nine filmed new deputy prime minister Michael McCormack in an unauthorised area within the parliament.

  1. ‘egregious breach of the rules’. Really, what a precious lot our politicians are. They seem to find their way round the rules when it comes to their ‘entitlements’ though. Loopholes galore for them!

  2. As I understand, the Nine cameras got a shot of the Minister’s phone screen which showed her text message. It was included in the report Chris did that night.

Out of all people, I’d have thought Chris would know the rules being a senior political journalist, not to mention being married to a Federal MP… I don’t think he’d have done this if he was still at the ABC!

  3. If Michaelia Cash was texting I’m curious how her messages became known, someone would have needed to look over her shoulder or has Chris got spies everywhere.
