UK actor Bill Maynard, best known for Heartbeat, has died aged 89.
He died in hospital in Leicestershire.
“He was larger than life and he just loved showbiz. He was so proud of the fact that he had been working for 81 years,” said his daughter-in-law.
Maynard played Claude Jeremiah Greengrass in Heartbeat from 1992 until 2000, and its spin-off The Royal in 2003.
He made his TV debut with Terry Scott in 1955 with comedy sketch show Great Scott, It’s Maynard.
He appeared in various Carry On films and featured in Oh No, It’s Selwyn Froggitt!, The Gaffer and In Sickness and In Health.
His final role was in the 2007 UK drama The Moorside about the disappearance of Shannon Matthews.

How sad. I enjoyed his role as Greengrass. May he rest in peace.
Ah one of my faves….remember him popping up in many tv shows…a great character actor.
Maev…. Thought he was the heart and soul of ‘Heartbeat’. He made that show. There were no others like him.
