Driven to Drink
In November last year Susan Lung was found by police passed out in her parked car on a busy Sydney street. It was just after midday and the 42-year-old mother of two was breathalysed. She was so drunk she could have died. But what’s remarkable is that her story isn’t rare. Research shows the consumption of alcohol by women is increasing to dangerous levels, with almost a quarter of Australian women aged between 35 and 59 drinking excessively. As Allison Langdon reports, it’s a national health crisis that has police particularly worried. However, in Susan Lung’s case there’s an added complication. Despite being a staggering nine times over the legal alcohol limit, she didn’t lose her licence because police couldn’t prove she had driven her car while she was drunk. Perhaps the most pressing question is what drives women like Susan to drink so much in the first place?

Digging for Answers
You’re unlikely to meet anyone as single-mindedly determined as Daryl Floyd. But it’s a resolve that comes from heartbreak. He needs to know what happened to his big brother Terry. In 1975, the cheeky 12-year-old boy was abducted in country Victoria. Detectives are convinced he was murdered, but his body has never been found and the case remains unsolved. Daryl believes his brother was dumped in a disused mine shaft, so he spends almost every weekend underground digging for clues. But he also thinks he knows who is responsible for killing Terry, and he has decided the time has come to confront the man.

  1. Whatever her reasons, whatever the truth, research has proven time & again that putting drink drivers in jail is not a deterrant, only a waste of taxpayers dollars. Research has also proven that the deterrent is in losing one’s license. I believe that mandatory psychological help would deal with the causes of the drinking to begin with, thus also eliminating the drinking problem. That’s where taxpayers money should go. Remember, the children of drink drivers will have the embarrassment & stress of the situation to deal with. No matter what the mother or father has done, it is unfair to punish the kids by taking the parent away. If such action is taken & other school kids find out, bullying will be relentless, possibly causing more child/teen suicides. We already have enough of that. Take the offender’s license & have court ordered psychological help. Nobody wins if society…

  2. What a crock this story was…you are excusing what this women did. There are no excuses for driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. All she did was make excuses as to why she was so hard done by….no sympathy…..
