Billboard Music Awards: “I’m so sick of moment of silence”

Awards host Kelly Clarkson makes a statement following the Santa Fe High School shooting in Texas.

Billboard Music Awards host Kelly Clarkson made a statement at the opening of the awards when she was due to acknowledge the 10 people killed in the Santa Fe High School shooting in her home state, Texas.

“Tonight they wanted me to say obviously we pray for all the victims, and pray for their families. They also wanted me to do a moment of silence.

“I’m so sick of moments of silence,” she said, as she fought through tears. “It’s not working, like, obviously.

“So why don’t we not do a moment of silence? Why don’t we do a moment of action? Why don’t we do a moment of change? Why don’t we change what’s happening? Because it’s horrible.

“Mommas and daddies should be able to send their kids to school,” she said. “To church. To movie theatres. To clubs. You should be able to live your life without that kind of fear. So we need to do better.”

It’s not clear what she intended by “moment of action.”

According to the New York Times Clarkson is a herself a gun owner, stating in 2012, “I live alone, so I’m not going out like that. I got no chance if some man breaks into my house. So, yeah, I have a gun.”

Three years later, she told People Magazine that she had a concealed handgun license as one of 25 things her fans might not know about her. Also during 2015, in a Twitter exchange with Amy Schumer, she said, “As a gun owner I feel like people should have 2 take a gun course & have background checks before they can buy 1. #logicpartyof1.”
