  1. Ten doing well and deservedly so. No bull just classy cooking and a funny show straight after. Win-win.
Then watched Westworld my favourite science fiction show in 2017 and 2018/ Once you know what that show is all about you won’t want to miss 1 episode, I guarantee it 🙂

    Same day last year: https://tvtonight.com.au/2017/05/monday-15-may-2017.html
    Masterchef: 868,000
    House Rules: 901,000
The Voice: 1,051,000 (TAYG this year in it’s place).
    7:30: 680,000/Australian Story: 658,000

Lot of ouches across that, not he least that last year between 7;30pm and 8:30pm there were 4,158,000 viewers and this year 3,412,000 viewers, Have You Been Paying Attention was on 876,000 last year so not so bad a drop. Even the secondaries dropped viewers, last year top was Peter Rabbit on 235,000, same top show this year but 194,000, Foxtel not fairing any better Top Rate last year AFL 360: 120,000 same top show this year but 92,000.

    • I saw some stats out of America (don’t think it was on this site) that showed overall viewing in 2017 was also down ~20% overall. Even more shockingly this was whilst “over 60” viewing had actually increased (+2~3%) meaning that youth viewership, e.g. teens/young adults had fallen by up to 40%!

I know others think this is the golden age of television but my family of 4 can’t find any more than an hours worth of first run television to watch a week, and zero of that is on free to air tv, or only appears after we’ve been able to source it somewhere else. Best I could give broadcast tv would be Hard Quiz, which can be genuinely funny without endlessly repeating the same jokes (a la Mad As Hell).

I think Australia used to have real identities on tv, & now most on are too shallow & uniformed & unoriginal to keep ones attention (I am nowhere near as old as that makes me sound)…

      • Jᴏʜɴɴʏ1P5

I just turned 57 and find that a lot of people my generation (friends around me) are turning to streaming now as it offers up more of the things we used to like watching. As in we we’re the ones in our 30’s watching and giving ratings to shows like The X-Files, Northern Exposure, Picket Fences, Hill Street Blues, NYPD Blue, The Sopranos, Oz, of course Twin Peaks and etc.

So I think it won’t be long before that over 60’s market for Free To Air TV decreases as well, have to remember that there are a lot of us who at 24 (in my case), got hold of a Commodore Amiga 1000 Computer in 1985 and grew up with the internet coming in. So we are moving into a period now for TV where people 60 and under are going to be a bit more tech savvy and not so thrown by the advent of the streaming services. In fact I feel we will be embracing it more and more heading into our retirement years I…

  3. Congratulations to Talkin Bout Your Generation and Have You Been Paying Attention. Both brilliant last night. People want to be entertained and have a laugh. Such a relief from all the reality crap.

    • melbourneamy

It’s so good to come home from a long day at work and watch something that makes you laugh…. am so over the endless bullying and love triangles that reality offers.

  4. HYBPA is such a success on a number of fronts, but to grow and rate higher than MasterChef in Melbourne is big, only 5,000 separated the two shows across 5 cities anyway
