The Voice coaches fail to keep it real

You had one job....

“Stay in your lane” The Voice coaches tell young singers.

But last night it was the Coaches who forgot what lane they are in: Reality TV.

When singers were buckling under the pressure of Live to air performances, missing key changes and forgetting songs the Coaches failed to critique them.

But with the exception of 1 moment from Kelly Rowland questioning a singer’s top notes, where was the Reality when it was needed? This is a warts-and-all genre that is supposed to get real when it matters.

Singing Live on national TV with limited rehearsal is certainly not easy for newcomers, but the Coaches are experienced enough to know their job too and that includes bringing the drama, providing constructive criticism and being honest. Authenticity is pivotal. Otherwise let’s just have a nice, homely variety show and don’t ask viewers to vote somebody out.

On social media last night viewers baulked at the elephant in the room.

  1. Same thing on American Idol, little to no criticism. Some of the best moments in this reality genre have been the criticism, and I don’t understand why this is being neutered. How are these people going to get fired up and motivated if they get praise even when they botch a song? Bring back the critical judges.

  2. Yes, AP was awful – he messed up big time and he knew it. (But he was brilliant last week performing ‘Sympathy’ with Sam.)
Ditto to a lesser degree for many of the others last night.
But not one word of constructive criticism from the judges – makes for pointless and boring viewing, and the contestants are never going to improve if they’re constantly gushed over by the judges when they are average at best.
Sheldon and Sam were the standouts last night though Sam wasn’t as good as in previous weeks.

  3. Everything about last night’s show felt so amateur.

The majority of contestants had vocal problems (a lot of pitch issues) and nearly everyone was given a song that did not suit their vocal or performance capabilities. AP’s performance was one of the worst talent show performances I’ve ever seen. The voting system (when working) also makes no sense, and seems to actively encourage people to vote based on popularity rather than the evening’s performances. The staging for most performances was absolutely terrible… rock formations, cliffs, The Matrix… why? And if the coaches aren’t going to offer any constructive comments, why are they there? The only criticism we got from a coach last night was for Aydan, who actually turned in one of the better performances.

If they want people to tune in, they need to do a lot better than the mess last night’s live show was.

    1. Wow there’s a blast from the past, Pip. Bernard King and Pot Luck. I remember watching it as a child when i was sick and not at school on weekdays. He used to crack me up! Explains a lot about my sense of humour. He had a wicked wit and delivered it with extra flair!

  4. Good points. It was certainly a love in last night. I did notice that George was the least used after each performance. Was that because it was live and the producers were concerned he would go rogue? Delta was so emotional in her feedback to everyone. No idea why. Regarding AP, he had immunity last night, so it wouldn’t have hurt him if they had given him some reality, but you’re right David, it has become too safe and warm.

      1. Unless I dreamt it; i thought i heard that on Today; Richard Wilkins interviewed the 4 wildcard acts; pretty sure he said whoever one wasn’t going to be eliminated first night anyway.

  5. Quite a few dodgy performances last night. But AP was a shocker. Yeah the judges are way too nice. And people aren’t happy with the final vote last night. The Voice app was playing up for many it seems. Many people were unable to vote.
