Sam Perry wins The Voice 2018

Perth "looper" beats out 3 pop vocalists for the 2018 title.

Perth “looper” Sam Perry has won The Voice 2018.

The 28 year old defeated Bella Paige, Sheldon Riley & Aydan Calafiore in a strong finale battle, winning $100,000 and a recording contract with Universal Music.

The Team Kelly performer drew a 4 chair coach turn from his blind audition “When Doves Cry” but as the series proceeded he found himself amid controversy when Boy George questioned whether a looper against singers was a fair contest. It added drama to his ongoing performances.

“I’m so thrilled for Sam, this is just the start of his musical journey. I couldn’t be prouder of how hard he has worked to earn this and I cannot wait to see what comes next. Stay tuned!” said Rowland.

George Ash, President, Universal Music Asia Pacific, added, “A huge congratulations to Sam on an incredible win in tonight’s Voice Grand Final. I am thrilled to welcome him to the Universal family and congratulate him and all the artists on The Voice 2018. Our congratulations also go to the amazing coaches, Channel Nine and ITV who deliver such a spectacular show. All of us at Universal look forward to working with Sam on his new music.”

The grand final, which threw on a glam finale, pulled over a million votes, a series record. Nine is already calling for 2019 applicants.

    1. Uses a mixing desk to create vocal sounds that are replayed as a audio base and singer sings over the top of it. Sam is good but not sure he ever improved beyond his own audition When Doves Cry. It was simply about Kelly showcasing what he already did.

  1. I first saw Sam Perry live at a Perth festival about 5 years ago and the bloke is an astonishing talent. I’m stunned he won The Voice because he isn’t the kind of bland, forgettable artist they normally champion. Congratulations to him.

  2. Sam is the only one, imho, who is allowed to call himself ‘an artist’. Love what he does and brought to The Voice (which I thought was very poor on real talent). For his own career progress he would have been better off not winning, judging by the way he performed his ‘winning single’ – without the looping station?

  3. George was right – any of the 4 could have won. They each had their strengths and distinction. For me, the disappointments of the night were the coaches duets with their finalists and how poor vocally that Kelly Rowland was especially. I expected her to be a powerhouse, unless she didn’t want to overshadow her mentorees – she was as dull as dishwater! Donna Summer was a powerhouse vocalist and Last Dance deserved more firepower. It’s well documented that George’s voice suffered due to his lifestyle and it showed too in his Eurythmics song with Sheldon. I know Delta had no contestant there but irony that arguably the strongest singer (coach) not only had no finalist, but was vocally absent on the night. Couldn’t they have found a way to have her perform. My 50 cent input!

  4. I watched last night but my heart really wasn’t in it. Disappointed that some amazing singers were given the boot last week. The final 4 really weren’t my cup of tea but Bella really should have won imo. Last night was just a huge anticlimax to a pretty ordinary season.

    1. See I was the opposite. This is the first finale where I liked all four and didn’t mind who won. I think Sam is the rightful winner. Of all the Voice winners he is thr only one likely to have a career after this show.

      1. Agree. Nobody else who “just sang” has stayed relevant since the Voice so maybe Sam can be the one to go on and be something. His talents stretch beyond simply singing into a microphone which can’t be said for the others.

        1. Agree.
Sam has been a breath of fresh air this year – something completely fresh and different from the usual same old, same old.
I think we’ll be hearing a lot more from him in the future.

          1. I’m happy to be proven wrong! voice just has a very poor track record compared to Idol & X Factor

  5. I wish Sam well, but his victory seems a little hollow given the inconsistent finals elimination structure of the program this season. Eliminating one finalist, then two the next week, then a massive (and unexplained) cull of 5 contestants last week just didn’t make sense. Felt like a rushed and haphazard ending.

    1. They do it that way every year. They eliminated five instead of four this year in the semifinals because there was 13 contestants in the live shows this year instead of 12.
