Buffy the Vampire Slayer getting reboot

Joss Whedon has been overseeing a new script, with plans for a black actress in the title role.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is getting the reboot treatment with a black actress in the lead role.

20th Century FOX Television, who produced the original drama has hired writer Monica Breen,(Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD) to pen the adaptation and serve as showrunner .

Creator Joss Whedon will be an executive producer on the series and has been working with Breen on the script.

Gail Berman, Joe Earley, Fran Kazui and Kaz Kazui (who produced Whedon’s original Buffy film) will also serve as executive producers on the potential series.

The new version, sources say, will be contemporary and build on the mythology of the original and be richly diverse, with some aspects of the series seen as metaphors for issues facing society today.

When a reboot was floated without Whedon he previously said, “This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths – just because they can’t think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself.

“I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death. But, you know, AFTER. I don’t love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I’m also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly”.

A network is yet to be attached.

  1. Hope Joss doesn’t spread himself to thin on the ground, what with his The Nevers being picked-up by HBO and Pippa Smith: Grown-Up Detective in the works for FreeForm TV as well.

  2. The Slayer has been black before, and the TV series was effectively a reboot of the less than stellar film-still waiting for a ‘Gilligan’s Island’ retool though….

    1. Yep the first Slayer Sineya as well as Nikki Wood, Kendra Young and another unnamed one, then over the whole lore of Slayers there have been Korean, Indian, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, Italian, Aztec/Mayan and others. With of course every nationality represented when all the potential Slayers were activated by Willow via the power of the scythe in the Chosen episode of the original series, so how some of the Twitter-verse are getting upset I have no idea.

      1. Bit of a difference a whole series decicated to one nationality of a slayer if that’s what they are upset about . You asked the question thou

        1. Yeah but the Slayer has been different nationalities over it’s lore and shown in the original series with Nikki Wood and Kendra Young’s stories along with the original Slayer Sineya guiding them at the end.

Perhaps they may have been pacified if it was called another name, maybe it’s just an African American playing a character called Buffy that upsets them but yeah. Say like Keisha: The Vampire Slayer or something, which could build on the original series much like say how there was Star Trek: The Next Generation and keep all the old lore intact. Though in a reboot if that lore was kept intact then those other nationalities would be shown as well, much like Buffy herself was not just shown as a one nationality Slayer, this could as well.
