A Deadwood movie is finally going ahead.
“I can finally-finally confirm we are greenlit on Deadwood movie … it will shoot in October,” Casey Bloys, president of programming, revealed during the Television Critics Association press tour.
He noted it was a “logistical nightmare” to get the ensemble cast — led by Timothy Olyphant and Ian McShane — back together.
A feature-length idea has been kicking around, killed off and revived multiple times. In 2012, creator David Milch said fans were unlikely to ever see a film version.
“We’ve been asked the Deadwood question for 11 consecutive years,” joked HBO corporate communications chief Quentin Schaffer.
Deadwood tells the story of a lawless mining town and the oft-shady characters that inhabit it. It came to an end in 2006 after a critically-acclaimed three seasons that racked up eight Emmys and a cult following.
