What’s the next big singing show?

It may well be The Masked Singer, a wild format originating in South Korea in which well-known singers perform in disguise (I haven’t really worked out why).

FOX has announced a US series with Nick Cannon as host, and judges Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger and Robin Thicke -who also play detective.

Its undisclosed performers have amassed 65 Grammy nominations, 16 multi-Platinum albums, 16 Emmy nominations, nine Broadway shows, four stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and four Super Bowl titles.

The format sees one act eliminated (and revealed) each week. The show is a viral phenomenon with more than half a billion fans worldwide and the No. 1 top-trending video of 2017 on YouTube.

Ryan Reynolds even performed in the Korean edition.

Produced for FOX by Endemol Shine, of course, I would put money on this coming to Australian television, both in the US form and as a local version.

FOX also announced Mental Samurai, hosted and produced by Rob Lowe, and Spin the Wheel.

  1. Kind of interested in this, as I have often wondered with the Idols, The Voices and etc., if some big names from the past came on would they get booted off on today’s standards. Like will Bob Dylan appear in say a bear mask and subsequently get voted off because they think he couldn’t hold a note, could Neil Young turn up in a buffalo mask and suffer the same fate while doing a cover of Heart of Gold (unless he uses an auto tune similar to how he did on his Trans album). Jumping to the 90’s would Eddie Vedder (from Pearl Jam), get told that if he wants to make it he would need to correct the slurring of his words when he sings.

Yeah this show kind of has some appeal to me.

  2. why are they wearing masks and why are they sitting on a panel?? wouldn’t it have been better to just have guests guessing who the mystery singers were. just saying ……. it is not like i watch reality tv or we really need any more crap shows!
