The Point: Sept 20

Tonight Senator Pat Dodson speaks on the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody.

Tonight on NITV’s The Point Senator Pat Dodson speaks on the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody.

The Point’s co-hosts, Rachael Hocking and John Paul Janke will interview Labor Senator for Western Australia and Shadow Assistant Minister for Indigenous Affairs and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, Pat Dodson, who served as a Commissioner on the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody.

On the program this week, NITV’s Western Australian Correspondent Rangi Hirini speaks with the family of Ms Dhu about the impact of her shock passing and the aftermath on the community. Ms Dhu was detained at the South Hedland Police Station in WA’s Pilbara region in 2014 for unpaid fines totalling $3,622. A coronial inquest last year found she suffered a catastrophic deterioration in her health, during three days in police custody, and ultimately passed away as a result of complications arising from septicaemia.

NITV journalist Liz Deep-Jones speaks with the family of Tane Chatfield and looks into the developments in his case. Tane Chatfield was found alone and unresponsive in a cell at the Tamworth Correctional Centre in 2017, and died in hospital two days later. Corrective Services NSW say Tane took his own life, however his family are sceptical of the information provided by the officials.

Finally, NITV’s reporter Madeline Hayman-Reber looks at the work being done by the Koori Youth Council, which was recently launched in Melbourne.

Thursday evenings at 8.30pm on NITV.
