In this series, Michael Portillo will unlock the doors to four extraordinary abandoned locations to reveal his hidden history of Britain; The Royal London Hospital, a 400-year-old prison, a ghost village, and a top-secret military base. What is justice for? How did Britain pioneer a health system for everyone? How do they weigh up the rights of the individual against the needs of the State? Hidden away in the heart of the Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire is the abandoned shell of Imber. A thousand-year-old-village was once a vibrant community before a series of extraordinary events transformed it into a desolate ghost town.
