SeaChange marks first scripted drama for ITV Studios Australia

Here's how ITV came to own the rights to a much-loved Aussie series.

The announcement of SeaChange returning to screens yesterday marks the first scripted drama from ITV Studios Australia.

ITV Studios has the rights due to its heritage through Granada Television and previously Artist Services (which originally produced the series co-created by Andrew Knight & Deb Cox).

It will produce the series wth Every Cloud Productions, Cox’s production company co-owned with producer Fiona Eagger.

ITV Studios Australia has four new and returning shows commissioned by Nine: SeaChange, Love Island, Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation and The Voice.

David Mott, CEO ITV Studios Australia said, “I couldn’t be more delighted that our deepening relationship with Nine Network has led to several of Australia’s favourite shows returning to air in 2019 including the record-breaking SeaChange, with our partners at Every Cloud Productions, as we diversify our Australian operation into scripted.”

Production will begin in 2019.

SeaChange will star its original lead, Sigrid Thornton, as Laura Gibson, a city lawyer who moves to a sleepy seaside town called Pearl Bay with her children, after her professional and personal life breaks down. It was the winner of three coveted Logie Awards for Outstanding Drama Series (1999 – 2001), becoming one of Australia’s most iconic franchises. The series will see a number of previous characters returning to screen, alongside some new faces for a new generation of fans.

  1. Agree with KellyM, why do networks have to bring up past series, it was great TV years ago but don’t think it will do well with current viewers, too older many series have failed with them trying to be re- made, let sleeping dogs lie.
