TV has next to no content to mark World AIDS Day tomorrow (there are some tired drama repeats next week that draw upon old style fears), but SBS will screen Magic Johnson: The Announcement on Sunday.
On November 7, 1991, Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson made people stop and watch at the Forum in Inglewood, California. But this time it wasn’t his basketball brilliance as a perennial NBA All-Star and three-time MVP that was captivated audiences worldwide. Instead, the 32-year- old superstar was holding a press conference to make the stunning announcement that he was HIV-positive and would be retiring from basketball immediately.
Having the AIDS virus in 1991 was widely seen as a death sentence, however, Magic had a different narrative in mind. Director Nelson George gets to the core of this incredible personal journey and explores how Magic continues to thrive more than two decades later.
Sunday, 2 December at 10.25pm on SBS.
