Seven has released numbers for its first Cricket test series, drawing up to 858,000 viewers.
While the Test with India has not been good news for Australia, it has seen Free to Air numbers down by some 30%.
But that was when Nine had exclusivity of Cricket. This year it has been available on Seven, Foxtel, (including Foxtel Now and Kayo) and the CA app. Seven says it always factored in the extra competition and sponsors are delighted with their campaigns.
The four-test series has delivered bumper ratings, with Seven scoring 56% of the daytime commercial television ratings. Seven has also delivered dominant shares of the key demographics, securing 60% of the P18-49 demographic and 58% of the P25-54 demographic during the daytime.
Over half of all Australians, 14.1 million people, have been reached by Seven’s Summer of Cricket, demonstrating the power of the number one summer sport on the number one network. This included over 4 million people being reached on Boxing Day for the first day of the third test.
Seven’s coverage of test match Cricket resumes on January 24, when Australia takes on Sri Lanka in Brisbane in the first day of a day-night test. Coverage of the men’s and women’s Big Bash League continues on Seven until February 17, and includes all the finals of both the men’s and women’s tournaments.

How do the big bash numbers compare to 10s figures when they had the bash??
This is not a surprise because when you split up the rights to a major sport the ratings will certainly reflect it, especially when networks share the rights to in this case Test Match Cricket and mot BBL. In reality Seven had no choice because Nine wanted Tennis more than Cricket. that forced Seven’s hand to partner with Foxtel. Foxtel is the host broadcaster now and the major broadcaster. Still the numbers are pretty good according to recent ratings Seven’s cricket coverage is beating Nine’s tennis coverage. Seven had the option if they wanted exclusivity they were not prepared to pay for it, thus we have what we have.
It’s the advertisers on free to air that have lost out. A year ago on Nine an average of well over 1million viewers and now, on average, fewer than 700,000 watching cricket on free to air.
When the Test matches keep winning in all the demographics and at times between the Tests and Twenty/20’s taking up the top 5 in all of them, they have a right to be happy. Take Saturday where the only other thing in both the 16-39 demographic was Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory (also on 7) and in the 18-49 the same plus Seven News. This has been the watershed year all over the world for other viewing kicking in, even in the US cord cutting is sitting at 38% and ratings are dropping, I believe that 30% down is going to be the way it is now, those types of ratings are soon going to be considered bumper ones for Free To Air.
There was a reason nine dumped the cricket and now the dismal ratings for seven confirm it .nine is laughing as tennis is the bigger summer sport and the better platform to launch all,its new offerings for 2019 .
Cricket Audience down 30.% and Seven West Media Shares down almost 45% since they signed their new cricket deal. So much for a great deal .????
Channel 7’s coverage of the cricket has been good so far. Channel 9 had gained much experience and utilised technological advances in their broadcasts. It is good to see more women’s cricket being broadcast nowadays. In addition to the Australia vs Sri Lanka 1st test coverage from The Gabba in Brisbane, hopefully, Channel 7 will also show the Australia vs Sri Lanka 2nd test from Manuka Oval in Canberra. There’s supposed to be a new media centre at Manuka Oval, however, I’m not sure it will be ready for the cricket this year, even though they expedited construction.
The construction company claims that the new broadcast and media centre is expected to be ready for the first ever held international test match at Manuka Oval.
