What do the Federal Election results hold for First Nations People?

To mark the start of National Reconciliation Week, a special season of NITV’s current affairs show The Point will investigate the current state of Indigenous affairs, calling everyone to be part to be a part of the conversation in the lead up to NAIDOC Week.

Co-hosted by John Paul Janke and Rachael Hocking, The Point will investigate iconic moments in history where First Nations Australians have taken a stand, how the nation has responded and potential next steps to constitutionally enshrine a Voice to Parliament and Makarrata Commission. It will also examine what is already underway across the country and the potential impact to native title as well as the international experience of other Indigenous communities.

NITV Channel Manager, Tanya Orman said: “With the current political state of Indigenous affairs in Australia, NITV and The Point are in the pivotal position, as the home of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander storytelling, to drive conversation surrounding where to next.

“Over the coming weeks we’ll be investigating the key themes of NAIDOC Week with a uniquely Indigenous lens, celebrating and championing our culture, heritage and aspirations. We’ll be hearing from a range of perspectives, from prominent names to up and coming voices, to share views on how we can move forward as a country.”

Leading Aboriginal voices and political thought shapers including Professor Megan Davis, Tom Calma, Noel Pearson, Chelsea Bond, Teela Reid and Tauto Sansbury will help to break down the 2019 NAIDOC Week theme: Voice. Treaty. Truth – the three key elements set out in the 2017 Uluru Statement from the Heart of the Nation, which represents the unified position of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

In NAIDOC week The Point brings together a group of young leaders from across the country in the senate chamber of Old Parliament House, Canberra to share their vision for the future.

NITV will also broadcast a curated slate of programming to drive the conversation surrounding Voice, Treaty, Truth. Highlights include landmark documentaries, films and programs such as After the Apology, Jasper Jones, Mabo: Life of an Island Man, Wik vs Queensland, Occupation: Native, We Don’t Need a Map, After Mabo, First Australians and Samson and Delilah.

*NAIDOC Week runs between 7-14 July and is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s history, culture and achievements, as the oldest continuing culture on the planet.
