Q&A asks who should host MasterChef?

Even ABC's Monday night panel couldn't resist weighing in on the big question on everyone's lips.

Q&A has weighed into the judge vacancies on MasterChef Australia. Yes really.

After some discussion about wage theft, an audience member raised the topic of  the three judges reportedly dumped over salary disagreement (Preston & Mehigan have denied this).

Soon the panel was quizzed on who should become the next judges and what values should they encompass to reinforce the true meaning of the show?

Amongst the suggestions was “the woman from Bake Off” (Maggie Beer), Sydney restaurants sending their finest and dropping the tension from the show’s competition element (good luck with that).

Senator Eric Abetz expressing his lack of knowledge said his wife was a lovely cook before naming a friend in the audience. Tim Costello said “I want to offer myself” before retelling a humorous tale when he was on the show with the Dalai Lama.

But 2010 MasterChef winner Adam Liaw, who was on the panel, had the final word.

“I can tell you I have not received a phone call, at all, on this. MasterChef Australia is the most influential cooking show in the entire world. And the reason it is so popular and connects with so many people is that it reflects the incredible food we have here in Australia. The way that we cook in our own homes, the diversity of influences, the produce that we have,” he said.

“Unfortunately one person who is not going to be on the judging panel is Margaret Fulton who very sadly passed away last week. She was a legend of Australian food. I’d like to honour her life. Literally the woman who taught Australia how to cook. My condolences go out to her Suzanne, Kate, Louise and all of the Gibbs kids.”

Classy response. But guest host Fran Kelly prodded for suggestions.

“I’m not going to give you any names, I’m sorry,” Liaw replied. “I’m sure there are people in discussion on that at the moment. I can tell you absolutely that I’m not one of them.

“It’s the best job in television and the best job in food. I don’t think anyone in the country would not interested in that job but I haven’t had a phone call yet.”

  1. Actually Adam was a media lawyer in his life pre-Masterchef, so pretty well suited to the panel. However, I’m not so sure he’s a good fit for the Masterchef judging panel.

    1. fair enough, i don’t think they mentioned that on his introduction? He does seem well spoken & def intelligent, i just couldn’t see where he fitted in with the rest of the panel. And maybe too genuine for Masterchef? i think maybe those guys have to do a little bit of acting at times is all i’ll say lol

  2. Alastair McLeod…personality plus….great chef…all round nice guy….and well experienced with TV and working to the camera….prefect fit to my mind…Just watched him in the past few days on one of those secondary channels…If he can be convinced to leave sunny Queensland for Melbourne.

  3. Poh and Matt, who were two of the three mentors this year, would be great…not sure about a third, perhaps an older more established chef/restaurateur could work well with them, but not Maggie Beer.

      1. Yeah I realise it’s big, but I’ve been surprised at how far reaching it is, everyone is talking about it. Curious to hear what more comes out of it.

        1. i would think it to be expected given its a very popular & well established 10 year old show plus the news of George’s drama’s were in the news already too.

      1. quite honestly i don’t even know why he was invited on, he has absolutely nothing to do with politics of journalism which is pretty much the subject of the show.
