Boom! 1.16m for Masked Singer launch

Ratings: 10 has a new hit. News Breakfast ties with Today. Seven wins Monday.

10 has a new hit on its hands.

The Masked Singer launched to a huge 1.16m viewers as the #1 show last night.

The singing show is the network’s biggest launch since I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! in 2015. It dominated the demos and lit social media afire as viewers tried to guess the performers.

To get those sort of numbers against the Brownlow Medal was no small feat, but the gamble paid off as it became an alternative, particularly in non-AFL cities.

Its launch sent The Block down to 801,000 in it slot. Australian Story (696,000) and 7:30 (579,000) followed.

The Brownlow Medal, playing at various times and across two channels, drew 880,000, down on 2018’s 895,000. The Red Carpet Arrivals were 463,000. But it sure helped Seven to a comfy network win.

Have You Been Paying Attention? was also strong at 823,000, on par with last week. Four Corners was 564,000 while This Time Next Year fell to 395,000.

But there were big problems for Today in breakfast, at just 169,000 it was one of the lowest numbers all year. Nine tied with ABC’s News Breakfast over two channels while Sunrise with Emmy carpet coverage was way ahead at 299,000.

Seven network won Monday with 34.7% then 10 22.7%, Nine 21.9%, ABC 15.4% and SBS 5.3%.

Seven News (1.01m / 1.03m) was best for Seven on a night of staggered scheduling.  The Chase was 618,000 / 388,000, Home and Away drew 529,000 in 3 cities, Highway Patrol was also 228,000 in various cities.

The Project was 527,000 / 287,000 for 10 then 10 News First (343,000), a Carl Barron special was 221,000 and Celebrity Name Game was low at 185,000.

Nine News drew 941,000 / 892,000, then A Current Affair (804,000) and Hot Seat (465,000 / 281,000) for Nine.

ABC News (673,000), Media Watch (425,000), Q&A (278,000), The Drum (188,000) also comprised ABC’s night.

On SBS it was SBS World News (148,000), Elizabeth (133,000) 24 Hours in Emergency (123,000), Mastermind (91,000) and Let’s Talk About Sex (90,000).

Bluey again topped multichannels with 166,000.

Sunrise: 299,000
Today: 169,000
News Breakfast: 126,000 / 43,000

OzTAM Overnights: Monday 23 September 2019

  1. Lots of gushing praise here for “The Masked Singer”, but I agree with David’s review. It was terrible, from the amateurish staging, to the shots of the audience singing along, to the judges’ cringe-inducing reactions. Personally, I can’t see how anyone apart from families with young children could possibly find it entertaining.

    1. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, it’s funny, and a good laugh is always welcome in my household where laughs can be few and far between, don’t kill the joy

  2. Hopefully for 10 they can hold onto the audience. Watched the Brownlow but happy to watch Masked Signer on Ten Play. If only they could get a decent news service at a more realistic timeslot in which working people could watch and 10 would be more competitive in the ratings on a consistent basis. Surely CBS can look at improving their news.

  3. The Masked Singer was great! I watched this before the Browblow Medal (no hesitation and who cares about WAGs), the excitement was the strength of the voices and guessing who, Osher and Hughesy did a fab job. I’m curious as to Lohan’s presence.

Tonight will be massive for 10

  4. Wow, awesome for 10. Was shocked that it was Gretel last night! I’m fairly certain two of last night’s singers were Cody SImpson (Robot) and Nikki Webster (Alien).

  5. Very happy with the numbers for Masked Singer Australia. Well deserved. 10 has been taking chances and finally something is paying off. DWTS could do really well if they cast the show with contestants 10’s audience wants to see.
Big Brother needs another go plus Wheel of Fortune at 6 which might give they credibility, eyeballs and traction for the night.

    1. That’s actually a great idea. Wheel of Fortune at 6 would be a good get I think. Enough time has passed for a new version of it and it carries some nice nostalgia with it.

    1. Back in the game maybe a stretch.
Ten Network has its lowest share the far into the year since its Annus Horribilis back in 2013.
In both total people and 25-54.

  6. Seems like a lot of us like to see an underdog rise-up, so good to see 10 rise from the ashes that they once were thanks in no small part to past management/board decisions … just don’t become a tall-poppy 😉

  7. Ten have bombarded us with previews. Over the weekend there was an ad on for The Masked Singer at every ad break for a couple of hours. It’s no wonder people were curious- we’ve been brainwashed!

  8. Im so happy for 10!!! Awesome numbers they would be thrilled.

Goes to show that taking a punt on some strong brands is paying off, not dodgy slighty different carbon copies.

    Go 10!!!

  9. I made the last minute decision to watch, and I’m glad I did. The whole family were involved in guessing, and none of us had a clue it was Gretel. Was just the right length time wise, no padding. Brilliant job 10, will be watching again tonight!!
