4 Comments:

  1. According to the OzTAM ratings website, there are actually more people and TV homes in Melbourne than Sydney. The population of Melbourne has surged massively in the last ten years and in 2017 the greater Melbourne catchment area actually now exceeds, Sydney as it includes Geelong.

  2. Hi David,
Just a quick question. How come Melbourne generally have must larger viewer numbers than Sydney even though Sydney has about 500,000 more people.

For example the survivor finale, almost 150,000 more viewers in Melbourne.

Do they have more Oztam boxes in Melbourne, or do people in Melbourne watch more TV?

    Thanks!

    • Hi Staden this has been asked before. There’s no clear reason, but here is some anecdotal which may explain habits: a) colder weather puts more people indoors longer. b) Melb seen as a stronger Arts city c) Foxtel penetration higher in Syd. Whilst these may not explain one single night they may shed light on why viewing is more habit forming overall. OzTAM has 1475 boxes in both cities, but less in others as per city size.
