Tom Malone departs as Head of Sport at Nine

Nine exec producer moves from Sport to new Radio role within the company.

Nine’s Head of Sport Tom Malone is departing the role having been appointed Managing Director Radio, ahead of Nine taking over operational control of Macquarie Media on November 8.

Malone has been Nine’s Director of Sport for nearly 4 years, after previous producing roles on 60 Minutes and Today, during this time Nine switched from cricket to tennis.

“Tom has a stellar track record as both a content creator and a media executive. For him this is a return to his roots in radio and I am confident he is the right person to lead Nine’s radio division,” said Hugh Marks, CEO of Nine.

“He brings an important skillset as we move forward and look for the opportunities that are created by having powerful radio brands like 2GB, 3AW, 4BC and 6PR within the Nine family.”

In an email to colleagues Malone said, “…I am sad to be leaving this great group of people, but excited about a great new challenge for our business, and of course happy I’m not leaving the family entirely! Until then, it’s business as usual here at Wide World of Sports. We’ve got a Fed Cup Final in Perth this weekend, with World Number 1, Ash Barty, leading Australia’s tilt at the title. A replacement Head of Sport will be announced in coming days, and whoever that person is will have my full support in transition and ongoing, and will need all of your great professionalism and support too.”

Nine has also confirmed that Macquarie’s newsrooms would fall under Darren Wick, Nine’s Director of News and Current Affairs.

        1. Nope, that would have said “TM quits” or ” TM dumped.” Departs or exits are factual without weight. I’m not Radio Tonight, the focus is on TV aspect. I understand from your site comments you’re a Nine fan, but the info is correct.

  1. Seven and Nine’s heads of sports both vacting, wow. We’re told “cost cutting/overlapping roles” and “head of radio” respectively.

However a conspiracy theorist might say Seven and Nine were either unhappy with them or wanted a new direction for their sports?
