Netflix viewing surges through pandemic

Lockdown and Tiger King adds another 16 million subscribers worldwide to Netflix.

In news that will surprise nobody, Netflix subscriber numbers have surged by almost 16 million globally over the last quarter.

The lift is attributed to the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown and successes with Tiger King and La Casa De Papel (aka Money Heist).

The world’s biggest SVOD said that it had gained 15.77 million paid customers over the past three months, thrashing initial predictions of 7 million additions made prior to the spread of Coronavirus.

That has taken its total number of paid subscribers to almost 183 million around the world, up by 23% on the same time last year.

Tiger King has drawn 64 million views,  Spanish drama La Casa De Papel is at 65 million hits, dating show Love Is Blind was watched by 30 million customers, and Ozark followed at 29 million.

However the data relates to the number of accounts that have clicked on a title and watched for at least two minutes.

In its letter to investors, Netflix said: “We’re acutely aware that we are fortunate to have a service that is even more meaningful to people confined at home, and which we can operate remotely with minimal disruption in the short to medium term.

“Like other home entertainment services, we’re seeing temporarily higher viewing and increased membership growth. We expect viewing to decline and membership growth to decelerate as home confinement ends, which we hope is soon.”

  1. I’ve been watching Ozark in tHe past few weeks. Quite good.

Started watching the big show show last night. Silly comedy with a laugh track. Used to watch wrestling when it was on tcm back in the late 90s before he moved to wwe and he was a favourite of mine.

  2. I have been nagged for a while by DS to take up one of his unused accounts on Netflix, while trying to source a particular show. So, I am one of the new ones, but I doubt I will use it long term.

I was surprised to find how little content it has that appeals to my demographic. i have a long list of movies/shows I’d like to watch someday. Only one of about one hundred were on Netflix. In particular, there seems to be a very limited catalogue of classics. I spent a long time searching, and endured many screens offering the same shows over and over.

    1. On a recent podcast I noted I didn’t really enjoy the show because I struggled to have sympathy for anybody. Sure they were crazy characters in a bonkers story, but I could have got the same from half the episodes. Whereas Making a Murderer I had real sympathy for an injustice.

  3. Just throwing out the recommendation for Money Heist/La Casa De Papel.

I don’t think I’ve been as excited and pumped in watching a scripted show.
