Seven to broadcast Easter Church services

Seven to screen Good Friday & Easter Sunday services from St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney.

Seven will broadcast nationally St Mary’s Cathedral Sydney’s Easter services across Channel 7, Prime 7 and live-streamed on 7plus.

This includes broadcast of The Lord’s Passion on Good Friday, Friday 10 April, from 3pm and Easter Sunday Mass, Sunday 12 April, from 10.30am.

Director of 7NEWS Sydney, Jason Morrison, said: “Easter is the most sacred time of the year on the liturgical calendar. With public gatherings and church services currently closed in response to the pandemic, the 7NEWS team is proud to help the Church to bring these important services to homes across the country.”

Catholic Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP said, “These national broadcasts mean people of all ages and no matter where they live or are currently isolating, will now be able to participate in the Mass.

“I know it will be especially welcome news to those living in nursing homes and aged care facilities who will especially be feeling the sting of separation from family over Easter, due to the restrictions on visits, and whose connection to their faith remains strong.

“All Australians are experiencing hardship at this time as we seek to limit the spread of the Coronavirus and many people are being asked to make great sacrifices such as our health professionals working long hours and risking their own health.

“Another sacrifice for people of faith is being unable to gather physically to celebrate the sacraments or even to spend time praying in a church. But by televising these services, it means we can spiritually come together to maintain our life of prayer and worship and strengthen our communion with one another.”

  1. Although I’m personally saddened at the fact that I couldn’t physically worship at church tonight, Maundy Thursday due to the pandemic, I do however appreciate and commend you Jason Morrison, 7News Sydney network and Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP for your arrangement.
Thank you for taking us back to our Traditional Christian roots, by allowing to broadcast the upcoming Sacred Easter services, through Our Lords’ Original, One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, God bless you all. Viva Cristo Rey!

  2. I think it is really “polarising” to show Catholic services for Easter. Your reason carries no water. Easter is important to Anglicans, Presbyterians & others such as Hillsong. A Catholic mass has no similarities with other religions, except that Jesus died & rose again. Poor choice channel 7.

    1. Don’t follow, anyway, St. Mary’s Sydney has a pretty good video setup. They live stream their services on YouTube. One from this week is at youtube.com/watch?v=_cPjsOrwilY. Seven won’t be sending an OB crew for a one/two man show when the cathedral can provide a complete package from its own system.

  3. Just in case anyone is wondering, no, there will not be a congregation.

Many dioceses are either now streaming or prerecording services for online consumption, which assists parishoners attend church during these times of physical distancing.

  4. I know the report says nationally– but will Channel 7 Melbourne really be airing The Lord’s Passion at 3pm on Good Friday?? It seems like a strange program to show in the middle of the RCH Good Friday Appeal in Melbourne?
