Indian star best known for Slumdog Millionaire, Life of Pi and In Treatment, has died.

Indian star Irrfan Khan, best known for Slumdog Millionaire, Life of Pi and In Treatment, has died, aged 53.

He was was admitted into an intensive care in Mumbai with a colon infection on Tuesday. Khan was previously diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour in 2018.

After a brief stint in Indian television he made his film debut in 1988 with Salaam Bombay before returning to Indian television for the next decade. He shot to global prominence playing the lead in The Warrior in 2001.

Indian cinema credits included Maqbool, Haasil, Paan Singh Tomar while international films included Slumdog Millionaire, Life of Pi, The Lunchbox, The Namesake, Jurassic World, The Amazing Spider-Man, Infern and The Song of Scorpions.

In 2010 series In Treatment he played Sunil Sanyal who was finding it difficult to come to terms with his wife’s death and loneliness after moving to New York.

Khan’s mother passed away in Jaipur a few days ago and he had to witness the funeral remotely via video link from Mumbai due to the ongoing coronavirus lockdown in India.

  1. Was India’s face in the west. Slumdog millionaire, Amazing Spiderman, Life of Pi, Lunchbox, Jurassic World, Inferno. Apart from all his amazing work (particularly in Indian cinema), was an absolute legend of a human being. Would be very sorely missed.
