New Star Trek prequel Strange New Worlds

Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck to star in series set prior to the USS Enterprise.

A new Star Trek prequel Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been given a series order by CBS All Access.

The series stars Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romijn as Number One and Ethan Peck as Science Officer Spock. It will follow Pike, Spock, and Number One in the decade before Captain Kirk boarded the U.S.S. Enterprise.

“Fans fell in love with Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck’s portrayals of these iconic characters when they were first introduced on Star Trek: Discovery last season,” said Julie McNamara, executive vice president and head of programming at CBS All Access. “This new series will be a perfect complement to the franchise, bringing a whole new perspective and series of adventures to Star Trek.”

The series will be produced by CBS Television Studios -it isn’t clear if it will air in Australia on 10 All Access or elsewhere.

  1. As season two of Discovery ended, I definitely wanted to follow Pike on the Enterprise more than Discovery. Even though I do enjoy Discovery. Picard wasn’t very good though.

I just hope they bring in new writers that are better suited to a more tradition Star Trek, over the action focused, non-sensical techno babble of the other recent series.

    1. I felt exactly the same way, I was hoping the show would then follow Pike and his crew and not Discovery, so I’m really happy with this news.

    2. Seems they’re not according to the linked Variety article:

“The series premiere was written by Akiva Goldsman with the story by Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet. Goldsman, Kurtzman and Lumet will serve as executive producers along with Henry Alonso Myers, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth. ”

      So same team as Discovery.

  2. I would think that Netflix will release this new Star Trek spin-off in Australia.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a nice follow up product to Star Trek: Discovery, it could close the
sci-fi gap left unfilled during the year it takes to make a season of ‘Discovery’ and return Anson Mount to our screens, Captain Pike is a role designed for him.
The next question is whether CBS’s ‘Discovery’ will continue past season 3, I think the answer is yes, CBS Studios ordering a Discovery spin off does indicate that they must see some life left in their Star Trek franchise creations. and Netflix would want it too, Netflix do need some new long run sci-fi titles other than Stranger Things.

    1. Season 4 of Discovery has been confirmed. I was beyond overjoyed hearing this news. You can see the chemistry between the three actors, they were so surprised by how much the fans loved their versions of classic characters. The premiere has been written already, obviously due to COVID19, no filming or pre-production has begun. I can’t wait to see it!!
