The Daily Edition: “It’s been an honour”

Sally Obermeder fights back tears as she signs off Seven show.

The Daily Edition has signed off after 7 years on Seven, axed last week due to cost-cutting by the network.

Original host Sally Obermeder was joined by Tom Williams for the last show with guests including showbiz regular Peter Ford, Rhonda Burchmore, Amanda Muggleton, and Jim Wilson with Matildas forward Kyah Simon.

Both Burchmore and Muggleton credited the programme with being constantly supportive of the arts in speaking to performers about their upcoming projects.

The final show included highlights looking back on celebrity guests, including glimpses of former presenters Kris Smith and Monique Wright.

Disappointingly ex-presenter Ryan Phelan, dropped by the network earlier this week, was nowhere to be seen in highlights.

Sally Obermeder fought back tears as she bid viewers farewell and the team under executive producer Sarah Stinson.

“Thank you so much, you guys for your tireless dedication to the program, your energy, commitment. Oh my goodness, I can’t talk about the team without crying. You guys have been the heart and soul of this show.

“And to you our viewers thank you again, from all of us at The Daily Edition. It really has been such a wonderful journey.

“And Tommy, to finish with you… so very, very special.”

“It’s been an honour to have been in your lounge rooms every afternoon and you will forever hold a place in our hearts.”

“What a ride. Thanks, everyone. It’s been a blast,” Williams added.

From next week Seven’s schedule is:
2pm The Chase
3pm The Chase
4pm Seven News
5pm The Chase
6pm Seven News

  1. Channel 7 Daytime. Where we repeat the repeats that we repeated earlier.

I mean seriously, Couldn’t they put a repeat of that previous night’s Home And Away followed by Border Security or something?

  2. Are you serious seven. You’re replacing the daily edition with double episodes of Chase, then news, another episode of Chase and news again. Use your brains channel 7..if you want to lose viewers from 2pm onwards, then you are going about it the right way. As far as I’m concerned I will not be watching 7 any longer. Shame on you! 😠The writer’s, producer’s, executive producer’s and decision makers of what you think 7 viewers would like to watch, really need to put your heads together and come up with better than chase and news. Thank you and goodbye Sally and Tom. ❤️😢 The Daily edition was something I enjoyed watching. Best of luck to you Sally and Tom. This isn’t the end for you. You will bounce back to a better and brighter future. There will be other opportunities for you. For now enjoy being with your families. Lean on them for support.

    1. Not just double episodes of Chase but double episodes of Chase repeated.. They play them over and over seen the same episodes played multiple times. If they were new would not be so bad . Don’t think it will last more a short gap before replaced by some thing more permanent

  3. Well it’s good they got to do a proper final show. 9 news now went off over the summer & was supposed to come back but never did. No farewell or any notification it’s been cancelled. There’s been nothing.

  4. It’s ashame to lose local content even if it is just a news program. But these are a sign of the times. It’s not just Covid causing problems. Australians are spoiled for choice, give are the days of channels and the networks having a bigger slice of the ratings pie. We have more streaming services than we could ever need, but more than this we are busier and as more and more of us switch off TV in favour of doing something else ratings suffer and jobs are lost. I said after the logiea last year, Australian TV is dying. It’s just the way it is. We don’t need endless news and dramas that fit in to 1 of 5 main genres. We can watch real people on YouTube.

Myself personally, the only TV I watch is big brother and maybe the Simpson’s. Wednesday through Saturday nights I watch Netflix and even late at night I watch YouTube or tiktok.

We live in a 24/7 world, now more than ever. We…

  5. Goodbye Sally and team. 😢😭 The Daily Edition was great to watch while having afternoon tea or on a day off from work. I can’t believe it’s being replaced with more of The Chase.

  6. I watched on occasion when i had the TV on. It wasn’t terrible and good to have something light around 2pm but Seven’s answer is The Chase for 3 hours and the news all around it? How unoriginal. I’m surprised they haven’t filled the gap with endless cooking shows like they have done to ruin 7Flix. Used to be my favourite channel during the day when i was watching and even the evening it used to have good alternative but now? Cooking here, there and everywhere.

  7. I haven’t seen many eps of TDE (due to study), but I had the chance to watch the final ep on 7. I felt very emotional when Sally made a farewell speech.

    1. Don’t bet on it not being Big Brother repeats or “encores” as they call them. They just can’t schedule them in advance – have to wait for the Episode to have aired prime time first.

  8. I have nothing against The Chase but looking at that new schedule makes me miss the days when afternoon TV on 7 consisted of Disney cartoons, kids game shows and repeats of MASH.

  9. i know there would be massive costs but would love to see a breakdown of the costs to run a studio based show like this…. if something like this rating #1 in its slot (i believe) cant survive then can FTA as a whole?.

    1. And you’d think advertorials would help with costs too. I suspect the problem is that day time TV has such low numbers that the difference, ratings wise, between the daily edition and its much cheaper replacement is too small to justify the additional cost of continuing production. So even if the show wasn’t running at a loss, its more economical to axe and replace it, sadly. I hope Sally and all the staff let go land on their feet elsewhere

      1. Are the numbers that low though? so traditional daytime audiences such as housewives have dwindled over the past few decades, but there are more flexible working hours for most now but those people probably might rather watch youtube or play video games.
Then again with covid lockdown more people across all demographics have been home to watch tv. I’m guessing main demographic of people watching afternoon news/magazine style shows would be over 40s though.
It would be great to read a story about daytime tv ratings & how they’ve changed over the years, as if you don’t have enough work to do already David lol

  10. It’s a shame to see it go partly because it will be replaced with endless repeats & encores. Whilst not a devoted watcher, when i did see it i enjoyed the magazine style content they had over the years, particularly interviews.
It’s downfall i think was due to the news segment, they should’ve just focused on the interviews & stories. There’s just too much news on too many channels now, especially considering people who want brief summaries can get it faster online or turn to ABC News 24. Bad timing that Ryan Phelan couldn’t be part of the final week/episode.
