Backflip as The Crown runs for six seasons after all

Writer Peter Morgan returns to the original plan to allow more time to tell the story.

Acclaimed UK drama The Crown is heading for six seasons after writer Peter Morgan changed his mind on five seasons.

“As we started to discuss the storylines for Series 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six season,” he said.

“To be clear, Series 6 will not bring us any closer to present-day – it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail.”

Queen Elizabeth II, Imelda Staunton, will now follow her predecessors in filming two series — as will Lesley Manville, who was last week confirmed as Princess Margaret.

  1. I hope this is all part of the Producers original ‘master plan’ to next get us to Series 7 when Dame Helen Mirren can return ( from playing the Queen on film) to complete the series as the ultimate interpreter of the ‘older’ Queen!!! Cheque books at the ready, get set, go……

  2. Vanessa Kirby was fantastic as Princess Margaret and I missed her once Bonham-Carter took over. I think the drama of WWII and its aftermath was so interesting that what came next became very boring (and too much about horses).

  3. The Crown probably had the best dramatic impact set between the 1950’s (for young Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip) and the 1970’s when Profumo, Anthony Blunt and Princess Margaret were active news items, The Crown would have been okay just covering that era alone.
The next obvious series would be Princess Diana and Charles which could be a mini series on its own.
It would be difficult to explore recent Royal events, though I’m sure the shows writers will have to decide what to include about Prince Andrew..

  4. good decision, the years 1997-2002 have plenty of content which definitely warrants an entire season to itself. I could never see the idea of cramming almost 2 decades into one season as viable.
then maybe in 10 years make a reboot to cover 2002 onwards.
