Compass: August 23

Recorder Queen takes the audience on a journey into the inner world of virtuoso Genevieve Lacey.

The Compass season finale features Recorder Queen, a semi-animated documentary directed by Sophie Raymond (Mrs Carey’s Concert) which takes the audience on a journey into the inner world of virtuoso Genevieve Lacey.

From the team that bought you the box office sensation Mrs Carey’s Concert comes the equally enchanting Recorder Queen. In a daringly innovative and genre-bending short film, director Sophie Raymond journeys into the inner world of musician Genevieve Lacey. In a unique collaboration, two distinctive Australian artists push the boundaries of their crafts. Filmmaker Raymond and recorder virtuoso Lacey combine animation, dramatic reconstruction, documentary footage and live performance to explore the altered states of a creative mind. At the pinnacle of a dazzling international career, Genevieve steps off the classical concert stage, driven by the need to rediscover her Australian roots, and give voice to the stories of her own time and place.

And then there’s the music! Elena Kats-Chernin, Johann Sebastian Bach, Paul Kelly, Antonio Vivaldi, the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Brett Dean and the Flinders Quartet are among the stellar lineup of musicians, including Lacey herself as both composer and internationally celebrated recorder virtuoso.

Sunday 23 August, 6.30pm on ABC.
