MTV VMAs: social distancing style

Here's how MTV got creative in staging its awards during a pandemic.

MTV dug deep for a creative solution to a safe broadcast of the MTV Video Music Awards this year.

The event was staged in outdoor locations across New York, which is sorta similar to what the Emmys is planning.

Lady Gaga was one of the big winners including a first-ever ‘Tricon’ award. “You can’t just call her a triple threat,” Bella Hadid said by way of introduction. “She turns pop music into high art. She redefines fashion,” Hadid continued, calling Gaga “a powerhouse” actor and someone who “inspires and empowers all of us.”

“I want to share this award with everybody at home tonight, everybody at home who is their own form of a Tricon,” Gaga said in her acceptance speech. “I want you to know that you can do this too. Just because we’re separated right now and culture may feel less alive in some ways, I know a renaissance is coming, and the wrath of pop culture will inspire you, and the rage of art will empower you as it responds to hardship with its generosity and love.”

MTV screened the event Live this morning in Australia, with 10 Peach to repeat it at 9pm tonight.
