Hard Quiz tops entertainment, Holey Moley drops.

Ratings: Hard Quiz return creates headaches for commercial networks. Travel Guides beat Holey Moley.

The return of Tom Gleeson’s Hard Quiz has caused headaches for commercial reality shows.

Hard Quiz won its slot at 622,000 viewers, leading the entertainment pack.

Travel Guides was next at 600,000, leaving Holey Moley to fall to 543,000 and The Amazing Race Australia at 447,000. While Holey Moley copped a substantial slide from its Monday debut, it still emerged a winner in the demos.

A return by The Weekly with Charlie Pickering also led after 8:30 at 577,000 (notwithstanding reality shows wrapping) followed by the debut of Aftertaste was 479,000.

Seven still led in shares at 27.8% then Nine 25.2%, ABC 19.8%, 10 19.6% and SBS 7.7%.

  1. Just saw the promo for singles night on HM. Thought this was a mini golf show, now it’s a dating show? C’mon Seven, pick one. To quote my teenage daughters ‘Ugh I’m out’

  2. Holey Moley isn’t the usual type of show I watch, but I was quite surprised to find myself loving it. The banter from Rob Riggle is hilarious and really makes the show.

  3. Loved Aftertaste….it seems to finish as soon as it got started…took me by surprise…
Also watched The Weekly with Charlie Pickering ….not something I usually do…but really enjoyed it….good laugh and interesting also.

  4. Genuinely loving both Holey Moly (though I keep going to 9Now, not 7Plus to watch it coz it just seems soooo Nine!) and Amazing Race. Both productions have put a lot of love into them, though I do think Sonia Kruegar is totally superfluous to the show, just like Sarah Wilson was in season 1 of MasterChef. Great to have Hard Quiz back, too.

    1. Agree. Holey Moley is an easy watch, although 60 minutes would be more than enough for 12 minutes of actual mini golf.

Would like it to return next year with tweaks

  5. Happy to hear TARA will go to 60 minutes from next week, 90 minutes is just too drawn out 3 nights a week. I hope the networks learn that more isn’t always better!

  6. Who could’ve predicted a game show based around mini golf would fail in a country that isn’t that heavily involved in mini golf… oh wait I did when they announced it.

I think seven’s main channel should shift to a 24 hour news channel, it’s the only thing they seem to be getting right these days.

    1. That is erroneous. I gently recommend that you work for Seven in the capacity of acquisitions, seeing you’re able to predict achievements and disappointments. In the interim, they have the number one breakfast and morning television show. Until last week, The Chase Australia was hammering the harangue on Nine. They’ve made inroads in their news offerings. Home and Away is doing well, as is some of their international programming. Let’s not overlook the AFL, Big Brother, Farmer Wants a Wife, SAS Australia just to name a few. Nine has started clawing back after being in a ratings nightmare. Seven will take over convincingly in judicious course.

    2. This country was a fan of mini-golf…before so many of the courses got shut down. When West Ryde went, that was the end of an era. I would love to have one in our region.

  7. When was this season of Hard Quiz filmed? Clearly before the pandemic began so ABC has been sitting on these for more than a year – maybe in 2019 they were filmed? The contestants on this show would have forgotten they were on it!

          1. I noticed one ep we watched very recently (might have been the kids’ special – maybe not) there were perspex dividers between the contestants both on the bench and between the two finalists.

  8. Congratulations Tom! Disappointing the round on witches didn’t have questions about the Roald Dahl movie, Hocus Pocus, Sabrina, Charmed and daytime soap Passions. How is Sarah able to keep up with Bob’s Burgers? It’s been off TV for ages.

  9. I agree with many others who have said Holey Moley 3 times a week is too much. I believe if it was only once a week there wouldn’t have been such a drop off in numbers, may have even gained a few.

  10. I recorded the show, deleted 6 by 4+ min ad breaks with 61 mins of actual show.

Neither of us are fans of reality TV, far from it. But we tried and gave up at what was the 2nd ad break. It was a painful experience.

Holey Moley Australia has our votes for the worse new show on FTA TV for 2021. Sorry Seven but it’s just awful.

  11. Sick of Hard Quiz…too many questions that do not relate directly to the subject (in the first round) and the stealing answers thing is garbage. Give me Mastermind any day.
As for The Amazing Race, they should have started with fewer teams and had less episodes per week and shorter episodes. Still love it though, I’m a diehard.

  12. I’m enjoying Holey Moley but it will be good when they introduce new holes. I got a bit sick of watching the same ones last night although that new dragon fire one was interesting.

I watched aftertaste. I really enjoyed it and it was good seeing Erik play a different role. I will be tuning into that one again.

  13. I think I did well to watch HM for two whole episodes, but there won’t be any more. After all the hype, a real disappointment.

Enjoying TAR, but the producers need to be really careful to not keep introducing new twists that manipulate the results. It is a great show but they need lessons from the US production team on how to stick to the formula.

Missed that Hard Quiz was back – that is one for catch-up. Also I am waiting to watch the Aftertaste and Travel Guides encores. There are too many shows on Wednesday to watch and record. It would be nice if some went to Thursday night (which is a desert) but I understand that they are reserving for the return of football.

  14. Interesting to see the TAR audience, although smaller, has been relatively consistent and held up well. Seven surely must be concerned about the drop for Holey Moley, but I expect to see it improve on Sunday with it being in an earlier slot and not mid-week. For Ten, Sunday’s TAR might be make or break – depends how well Holey Moley does.

  15. Loving Travel Guides, especially the current eps , showcasing local destinations.
Such a fun and lighthearted show, with a really entertaining cast.
Hopefully more episodes after the Tennis ?
Also enjoyed the first ep of Aftertaste. Such a departure from the amiable, easygoing characters Eric Thompson usually plays.

  16. Didn’t take long for Holey Moley to crash and burn. TAR not doing all that well either. Great result for Travel Guides two nights in a row. Must admit this is one of my favourite shows.

  17. A 400k drop in 2 days doesn’t bode that well for Holey Moley. Will see where it settles i suppose. I must say though, Amazing Race Australia, i just can’t get into it this season. I’ve tried but it just seems slow. Is this just me thinking this or are others thinking the same? Either way though, Wednesday was a pretty boring night all round though. Not much catching my eye to be honest.

    1. I think the last episode of TARAus was the best of the 3, but I agree – the episode’s edit just drags on a little too long. I think it airs for just over 90 minutes, but they could tighten up some parts of the show to get to about 75 minutes.

      1. According to the TV Guide, TARA goes to 60 minute episodes from Monday. I’ll be looking forward to the tighter run times as I agree they do drag on a bit.
