Netflix adds “Play Something” option

"There are times when we just don’t want to make decisions."

Netflix has now formally added a new shuffle feature to its interface, “Play Something,” designed to let subscribers discover new titles, based on their watch history.

“There are times when we just don’t want to make decisions. A Friday evening after a long work week. A fridge full of food but nothing jumps out. A family movie night where no one can agree. We’ve all been there. Sometimes you just want to open Netflix and dive right into a new story. That’s why we’ve created Play Something, an exciting new way to kick back and watch,” Netflix wrote in a blog post.

The ‘Play Something’ button will lead to any of the following:

· A brand new series or film,
· A series or film you’re already watching,
· A series or film on your list, or
· An unfinished series or film you may want to revisit.

Play Something is located in several places on connected TVs:

· Underneath your profile name
· The tenth row on your Netflix homepage
· The navigation menu on the left of the screen

For members that use screen-readers, Play Something fully supports Text-to-Speech (TTS). To discover your next favorite film or show with Play Something using TTS, visit our Accessibility help center for more information on how to enable this feature through your TV device settings. When finding your next story, let the story find you. Whether you’re in the mood for a new or familiar favorite, just ‘Play Something’ and let Netflix handle the rest. Easy.

  1. Anyone who has seen the full list of Netflix titles will appreciate there are hundreds to choose from, and that is the issue for subscribers, unless you know what your preference is most viewers will target recent releases so a lot of entertainment gets buried in the clutter.
How Netflix can get around this issue is debatable as their aim is to keep subscriber numbers constant by promoting new product, having menus of titles in alphabetical order probably wouldn’t work.

    1. I’ve had it on my Netflix for the past 2 months or so. I noticed it when I was scrolling down the listings and then play something appeared.

  2. This is basically Netflix bringing back their “Max” A.I. decision maker. In the early days of Netflix, it would give you 3 options of movies 3 times. You choose a movie from each selection, then with its algorithm, it would make a decision for you.
Not sure why they got rid of “Max” in the first place. It was pretty accurate.
This was before Netflix went international.
