Degrees of fairness and Big Brother

BB fiddles with the format and removes a housemate who was nominated for eviction by claiming it as a twist.

Big Brother fans took to social media last night after the latest twist in the show which upended the eviction process and saw front-runner Jessica sent packing.

In his latest twist Big Brother delivered housemate Danny a secret key in which he was allowed to remove a housemate nominated for eviction.

Housemates were stunned to learn that he had helped Ari escape into a tunnel and avoid eviction entirely -despite having been formally nominated by Christina.

So why didn’t housemates revolt and cry foul? Given the show is not Live it isn’t clear whether any did just that. If Ari didn’t want to attend the eviction process and plea his case, that’s his call.

But since when does absence mean someone’s nomination is cancelled entirely?

With so many advantages being handed to Danny lately it sure feels like producers are doing all they can to keep him in the game and cull his threats.

But be careful.

Discarding the basics of the game (1] Housemates locked up. 2] Nomination. 3] Eviction) is arguably a breach of trust with your audience.

But there were also those who were fans of the episode.

  1. The chips being stacked intentionally in Danny’s corner are grotesquely unfair. I do hope it all unravels for him pretty darn sharpish, or that loyal viewers desert the show in droves as this series lumbers towards his undeserved set-up win.

  2. Not happy the way Danny has been given so many rewards, also SJ putting on water works to save herself. She screwed Katie. Hope Marly or Tilly win

  3. I agree with most of the comments here but lets be honest -danny and ari are probably the most entertaing players..im very glad jess left. Danny is such a goose you cant help but like/feel sorry for him. L love how they keep saying ” who wins, you decide” we might get final pick but the producers and not the players are deciding the final 3.

  4. The other point is… if BB was removing Ari from eviction he didn’t tell everyone that in time for them to hatch a new game plan. If it’s a competition it’s gotta observe some boundaries. BB meddling with noms is very risky with the audience.

    1. That’s a fair point – even with twist, there is a way to make them fair from a game while maintaining the entertainment value of the twists.

Say BB reveals Ari’s canceled nominations 30 minutes before the vote. Then it’s fair (new game plans can form) and I’d argue it’s more entertaining as the players run around in a panicked craze to prepare the new plans.

  5. This season has been unfair since episode 1 Danny has been getting favouritism from big brother he’s had 6 advantages so far 4 in which we’re in this week’s episode’s big brother isn’t entertaining anymore when producers are manipulating the game to go in the direction they want it to go

  6. I also had more of a suspicion of manipulation when SJ and Mary were evicted and then returned scott-free. Danny was on top of the game at the time but that decimated Danny’s alliance and strategy. Just as Jess was at the top in the leadup to last nights eviction. I don’t think Danny is being particularly favored, but the show is manipulated to give the person at the bottom a leg up so the whole season is not a one-sided affair. It is supposed to be entertainment after all. Survivor does it all the time when the person that is sure to be eliminated stumbles across a hidden immunity idol.

  7. Danny happened to fight to be the last one to go in the panic room. If it wasn’t Danny it would have been someone else. Adrianna wanted the last spot. Would everyone be bashing on her if she did the same thing? Danny wasn’t nominated he just happened to get this advantage. He didn’t know what it was.
Thank god Jess is gone. Now others can get to be in the spotlight. We barely hear Charlotte or Sid.

    1. This I agree with. They didn’t choose Danny for this advantage, they wouldn’t have known who would get it. It may just as easily have been Jess.

  8. I’m not watching the new BB, I don’t like the over produced feel to it, but I figure there’s prize money up for grabs, so I wonder if this type of manipulation creates concern that contestants have been robbed of a fair chance at the cash prize, and the series has been weighted towards a select group from the start. The lure of a big prize is nothing but a carrot to get people signing up to make fools of themselves.

Same could be said of any of these pre-recorded shows of course, it’s not just BB.

  9. Ok I am going out for on a limb and bet Danny gets evicted in the next week (that’s if they don’t keep doing the darn non eviction thing).

    1. It’s a game. It’s even more manufactured with this format and pre recording. I’ve stopped questioning the fairness and just been entertained by the silliness and non covid content. Sid for the win! 🙂

  10. Danny has not been “handed” anything. He is just smarter than the rest. If you recall, Adriana wanted to go into the panic room last, which means she would have got the key and the sugary treats. However, Danny talked his way into going in last and therefore got the rewards. And if someone is called to the diary room, Danny always tries to get there first, as he is willing to take the risk of getting something bad to get something good, hence he got the steak the other night.

Jess and Marley stupidly volunteered immediately to go into the panic room…not sure why…

    1. RE: Jess & Marley – the panic room task could have been anything. For all we know, the first people in the panic room could have been given a good thing.

      1. Well it seems Danny shows a lot of narc characteristics, backstabbing, changing and realigning “friendships” to suit his needs, two faced and duplicitous…but maybe that’s the game and he is mastering it, but the producers fingerprints manipulating the game to suit also

        1. Yeah I don’t see any of that in Danny. He’s playing a game, better than anyone else. Saying that he’ll nominate Jess straight to her face is priceless. This isn’t MAFS, I don’t think any of these people have any malice towards anyone else at all. And I think they’ll all have a drink together when it’s all done.
I thought old mate who went out in week one (Katie’s ex – can’t even remember his name) was narcissistic…and I’m glad he went immediately.

  11. I don’t hate the twist of there being a secret power to cancel a nomination (and I think they did something similar last year for a twist too – but it didn’t have much impact)

But I do find it annoying that Dan is the central player of the show with so many of the powers & tasks going his way – There is that cynical thinking of producers wanting to keep him on by any means, when the game should play out naturally.

  12. I thought it was the best episode of a very bad season so far. Happy Jess is gone but I do agree we see so much of Danny with SJ running second and then Tilly. Maybe Danny was the only one that was actually doing something in the house worth watching? How did BB know Danny was going to be the one to go into the panic room last unless they told him to? Disappointing for me they have changed the format so much but still watching

  13. These people seem to have forgotten SJ & Mary being saved a few weeks back & being allowed to spy on the house mates & gave Katie’s alliance tips on what Danny & his alliance were planning. I for one was glad to see Jess finally go. But Danny’s kidding himself if he thinks Ari is going to be grateful. Ari only cares about Ari & will stab him in the back at the first opportunity.

    1. I definitely haven’t forgotten that at all. I’ve just been saying the manipulation from the producers all season has continually cost people a spot in the game. Katie and Jess got the raw end of the deal, love or hate them. They were pushed out by producers essentially. Daniel though from day 1 he has been given advantage after advantage after advantage and you know it wouldn’t surprise me if he is in the final 3. Yeah it made exciting television but its pure manipulation and if BBAU comes back in 2022, then this needs to change and not happen again.

    2. That played so much worse as manipulation than what happened in this episode.
In one instance, the last player outside of the panic room, as chosen by the housemates gets an advantage. It was Danny. He could save a nominee.

In the previous one, people were evicted. Then BB decided they could stay. We have no idea if that was planned ahead of time or done in the moment. It was the same with Angie last year. The twists don’t work when we don’t know ahead of time, which is impossible in a pre-recorded show. They only work when the housemates know ahead of time. This is what happened with Danny.

People crying foul are not being reasonable or objective. This was probably one of the least examples of deliberate producer interference in the show.

It very well could have been Danny saving himself, leaving his friends up on the eviction stage. What happened couldn’t have played out…
