US actor best known for The Mod Squad, has died aged 81.

US actor Clarence Williams III, best known for The Mod Squad, has died aged 81.

He died following a battle with colon cancer last Friday.

Williams is best remembered as Lincoln “Linc” Hayes on police series The Mod Squad from 1968 to 1973, opposite Michael Cole and Peggy Lipton. The trio were referred to as “the hippest and first young undercover cops on TV”.

Following his duty as a paratrooper he undertook roles on Broadway in 1960 before guest appearances on television in Daktari and Tarzan.

After The Mod Squad, Williams appeared in Hill Street Blues, T.J. Hooker, The Cosby Show, Miami Vice, Nasty Boys, Jake and the Fatman, The Cosby Mysteries, Walker, Texas Ranger, and Everybody Hates Chris.

Films included Purple Rain, 52 Pick-Up, I’m Gonna Get You Sucka, Sugar Hill, Tales From the Hood, The Legend of 1900, Half-Baked, The General’s Daughter, Reindeer Games and a recurring role as Philby Cross in the Mystery Woman movie series on the Hallmark Channel.

  1. He was the Laurence Fishburne of the 70’s and a very recognisable main actor on the small screen when being a successful an African American in Hollywood was still a struggle.
