The Block 2021 confirms Fans v Faves season

Two returning couples face off against three new teams in Hampton season of The Block.

Nine has finally confirmed a Fans v Faves season for its 2021 season of The Block in Hampton.

The cast features returning contestants Mark & Mitch (2019 The Oslo), Ronnie and Georgia (2017 Elsternwick) taking on ex-Love Island twins Josh & Luke and newcomers Tanya & Vito and Kirsty & Jesse.

It’s the second Fans v Faves season for the reality series, the last in Albert Park, 2014.

In addition to being in Bronte Court, its first ever cul-de-sac development, there are at least two other “firsts” this year, one of which is teased in this western-style promo.

Chatter also promises some fierce rivalry from the get go.

Completed before Melbourne’s most recent lockdown, Nine is expected to air the series from August after the Olympics.

The Block, Australia’s most successful renovation reality program, returns soon to Channel 9 for an unbelievable 17th season with a twist: Fans v Faves – a wild west showdown of epic proportions.

Three unsuspecting yet hopeful couples come face to face with two sets of very experienced returning, all-star couples in a setting never attempted before – a traditional Australian cul-de-sac, in the Melbourne bayside suburb of Hampton.

This season, we’re tearing up the plans in the biggest shakeup in Block history. For the first time, there will be no house plans for contestants to work off. Blockheads must not only renovate the mammoth project, they’ll also have to design the layout and inclusions of their houses themselves from scratch.

Faves returning this year are Perth’s Ronnie (45) and Georgia (37) from the 2017 Elsternwick series, and Sydney couple Mitch (58) and Mark (59) from the 2019 Oslo series – both renovation powerhouses who don’t plan on letting any newbies show them up.

If you weren’t already seeing double, irresistibly charismatic identical twins Josh and Luke (27), who made their television debut on Love Island Australia in 2019, will join two other newbie couples – Melbourne parents Tanya (39) and Vito (44), and country music kids Kirsty (32) and Jesse (31), hailing all the way from Wangi Wangi in regional NSW.

Scott Cam, who returns to host his 15th series of The Block, said: “Expect the unexpected. This build was extremely tough to plan and work out where things would go for many of our contestants because of this new twist. The plans have been thrown out the window and it leads to plenty of stuff-ups!

“The Fans have everything to gain and the Faves have reputations to uphold. This will be a dramatic showdown like we have never seen before.”

In a season packed with firsts, this one will literally dig deeper than ever, with each property having an underground excavation for contestants to create a basement in their homes.

Joining Scott Cam again this season will be his Block co-host, Shelley Craft, site foremen Keith and Dan, and Australia’s three favourite renovation judges, Neale Whitaker, Shaynna Blaze and Darren Palmer.

The new series is one that executive producer and Block co-creator Julian Cress is very excited about.

“Putting Block Fans up against experienced all-star Faves could have gone in any direction. On the very first day of filming this series, these Blockheads started to argue with each other in a way we had never seen before,” Cress said.

“The competitive spirit of both the Fans and the Faves in this high-pressure build with no plans takes things to a new level week after week and I can’t wait for audiences to see that.”

For the uninitiated, at stake is $100,000 for the winner of The Block, plus whatever profits their home can make on the critical auction day. All that’s standing in the way is five dilapidated houses and three fierce judges who will score the room reveals as they’re delivered each week.

  1. Can’t wait! So happy Ronnie and Georgia are back, they were not treated well on their season. Looking forward to this, August seems early but that’s good for me.

    1. So glad you say that @Loz. I am watching the Elsternwick season for the first time now and I find the editing of Ronnie and Georgia truly awful. And thought it was just me who thought this. I thought that maybe I am biased (follow them on Instagram) and enjoy following their page. So excited to see them again and see if they will be edited differently?

  2. Enjoyed how they included judges, Dan and Keith and Shelly in this years promo… But did the brothers need to be shirtless in every screen?

Also unsure how I feel about the fans v faves. Maybe it’s because I feel like the faves are only returning as they were the “trouble makers” of their seasons – and not because they’re actually “faves”. I feel like it’s almost taken a page from Masterchef 2020 – a solid change in format to a cul de sac, so draw people back in with contestants they know.

And why we have Love Island cross overs now into The Block is beyond me….
