Vale: Dieter Brummer

Actor Dieter Brummer, best known as Shane Parrish in Home & Away, has died.

Actor Dieter Brummer, best known as Shane Parrish in Home & Away, has died aged just 45.

NSW Police confirmed, “About 1.30pm (Saturday 24 July 2021), officers from The Hills Police Area Command responded to reports of a concern for welfare at a home on Glenhaven Road, Glenhaven.

“The body of a man was located inside the home. His death is not believed to be suspicious. A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.”

Brummer starred as Shane Parrish on Home and Away from 1992 -1996, becoming a teen sensation alongside co-star Melissa George. A Silver Logie winner in 1995 and 1996, he was on magazine covers and bedrooms walls not just across Australia, but the UK and beyond.

His post-soapie career was more checkered, with credits including Medivac, Shark Bay, The Man from Snowy River, Rescue: Special Ops and Crash Palace.

He later had adult roles in Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities, Neighbours and Winners and Losers.

When he wasn’t acting Brummer enjoyed his life working outdoors.

He once told TV Tonight, ““It was a pretty intense time coming out of high school to receive all this fame and adulation. As great as it was I wanted to prove to myself I could get my hands dirty and sweat for a buck as easily as standing around on set, being primped and preened.

“People say that I’m just a window cleaner; in reality it’s substantially more involved than that – working at heights [is] a relatively specialist trade.

“I just wanted to get a bit of real life experience under my belt, but I’d always intended on coming back to the acting game at some point.”

He added, “I was so busy as a teenager I didn’t get to join friends on trips or do a lot of the things my friends got to do. I spent the early part of my 20s catching up on a few years that I’d missed out on.”
A Seven spokesperson said in a statement, “Home and Away and Channel 7 are deeply saddened to hear of Dieter Brummer’s passing. Dieter was a much-loved Home and Away cast member and celebrated by Australian and international audiences for his award-winning portrayal of Shane Parrish. We send our sincere condolences to Dieter’s family and friends during this very difficult time.”

Jason Herbison, Neighbours Executive Producer, said: “Everyone at Neighbours is saddened to learn of the passing of Dieter Brummer. We remember him as a talented actor, professional and a very down to earth guy on set. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”

Andy Ryan, Head of Drama for Nine: “Everyone at Nine is deeply saddened by the news of Dieter’s passing. Even beyond his iconic role as Shane in Home and Away, Dieter was an outstanding and versatile talent. We were privileged to have him star in several Nine dramas, and he’ll always be remembered for his indelible performance as corrupt detective Trevor Haken in Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities and Underbelly: The Golden Mile. Our thoughts are with Dieter’s family and loved ones.”

  1. So sad, tears dwelling as I read this. I can remember him starting on Home and Away and his first pictures in TV Week, like it was yesterday.

  2. Perhaps another victim of huge early success & type casting with some people never been able to either transition back into another job or sustain further consistent work in acting. Doing other work surely more difficult in many ways for someone who’d been a teen idol, as they’d still be recognized everywhere they go by fans.

He was great in the Underbelly role, i thought we might see alot more of him on screens after that but sadly not. Condolences to all who knew him, RIP.

      1. Good point however streaming services have replaced alot of FTA content, not sure about the percentage of Aussie made shows on there though, compared to the amount of FTA shows say 10 yrs ago. But go back to the 90’s and there was a lot more Aussie made drama & comedy on FTA.

At least Home & Away and Neighbours have been a staple & consistently provided work for many local actors..

  3. Shane and Angel were the tv couple of the 90s. I was devastated when Dieter left home and away and they killed Shane off.

    Rest in Peace Dieter.
