ABC Arts examines and celebrates the work and achievements of sculptor Bronwyn Oliver.

ABC TV Plus screens Arts documentary Bronwyn Oliver: The Shadows Within on Wednesday.

As part of the Know My Name partnership with the National Gallery of Australia, ABC Arts is pleased to present a one-off documentary that examines and celebrates the work and achievements of sculptor Bronwyn Oliver.

Bronwyn Oliver (1959 -2006) was one of the foremost sculptors in 20th century Australia. Her public works are seen in Sydney’s Royal Botanic Gardens, the University of New South Wales and in Brisbane’s Queen Street Mall to name just a few. She won the major prizes of her generation including the 1981 NSW Travelling Arts Scholarship (which took her to Chelsea School of Art in London to study a Masters) and the prestigious 1994 Moet and Chandon Fellowship.

She was much sought after for private commissions. And yet since her death by suicide 15 years ago, Oliver’s name is remembered by too few.

In this documentary, Bronwyn Oliver – The Shadows Within, filmmaker Catherine Hunter has unearthed a valuable archive which allows Oliver’s own voice to drive the narrative.

Throughout the Know My Name partnership, ABC Arts will present a vibrant slate of original content across all ABC platforms to celebrate the work of all female artists and to enhance understanding of their contribution to Australia’s cultural life.

Production credits: Director & Producer, Catherine Hunter, Cinematographer & Editor – Bruce Inglis ABC Factual Manager Julie Hanna. ABC Head of Factual & Culture Jennifer Collins.

9pm Wednesday October 13 on ABC TV Plus.
