2020 Russian thriller Dead Mountain: The Dyatlov Pass Incident screens tomorrow at SBS on Demand.

This is a period saga on one of the most horrific Soviet true crime mysteries.

All eight episodes available to stream. In Russian with English subtitles.

January 1959, Soviet Union. In the icy Ural Mountains, a group of nine students sets out on a ski trek. Even though they all are well-experienced hikers, they never reach their destination. As their bodies turn up a month later, it leaves local investigators puzzled. Their tent was cut open from the inside, they are found frozen stiff in their underwear spread around the camp, some are even partially mangled. Whom or what did they run from? Why did they die, and how?

When Oleg (Pyotr Fyodorov), a KGB major, arrives in the province, his inquiry is to be held strictly confidential. Troubled by his past as a WWII veteran, he has a sixth sense and death seems to follow him around as he digs deeper into the mysterious incident. With the help of Katya (Mariya Lugovaya), the local medical examiner, Oleg is hell-bent on finding the truth. But the more he learns, the more it becomes clear – the reason the students died will never see the light of day. No one can ever know what really happened. No one. Except him.

Dead Mountain: The Dyatlov Pass Incident finally puts all the dots together and sheds light on one of the most horrific Soviet true crime mysteries.

Thursday, 7 October 2021 on SBS On Demand.

  1. Dead Mountain: The Dyatlov Pass Incident sounds a fascinating subject, perhaps I’ve been watching too many detective shows recently.
The SBS have been doing well recently but you have to keep your eyes open regarding renewals, new shows and seasons sneak in like ‘Wild District’ season 2 which screened in 2019, but at least it’s being shown.
Another future acquisition for SBS on Demand to consider could be ‘Red Election’ a joint UK, Danish production, it looks promising, especially for the spy espionage fans who miss ‘Berlin Station’ or ‘Spooks’.
