The real reason Lisa Wilkinson left the Today show can now be revealed.

She hated Blocky the cash mascot!

In her new book, It Wasn’t Meant to Be Like This, the former Today show host says what we all privately think…. Breakfast TV cash mascots suck.

Recalling one occasion, Wilkinson recalls listening to her voicemail and hearing the daily rundown for the show the next day.

“Psychologist Justin Coulson is joining us with advice on how to keep kids calm during end-of-school exams; Ray Hadley’s in for What’s Making News; Dr Joanna MacMillan with healthy food choices heading into summer; two judges from The Block Darren Palmer and Neale Whitaker are on to promote the show; Chris Urquhart is joining the circus just before the 8 o’clock news; and the cash mascots will be at the desk for the 7.45 Cash Call,'” she wrote.

“Those bloody mascots. I hated those stupid mascots.”

Bravo!

Four years on at least she no longer wakes up with Today.

  2. One of the reasons I’m enjoying Today of late is they don’t have these tacky gimmicks that just cheapen the brand. Last time I watched Sunrise I reckon they had four different give-aways in half an hour.

  3. Has she come out & said she hated the Cash cow from when she worked on Sunrise? Is there any dirt from Sunrise or is it only the Today Show? She worked there for several years before moving to 9.

  4. One of the main reasons I dislike Sunrise and the Today show is the stupid mascots. I get it some people must like that kind of thing but if I want morning news its the ABC for me. News without the flashing lights, the yelling at the audience and being a regional viewer for the last twenty years a disregard for anyone outside of Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane (with the news highlights being very city based about house fires, speed chases and car pile ups on the freeways…well they used to be…it may have improved)?
