Multichannel Survey 2021: ABC Kids / ABC TV Plus / ABC ME / ABC News

Television's newest multichannel offers content for mind, the heart & the funny bone. And then there is Bluey.

Since last year’s Multichannel Survey, ABC TV Plus has replaced ABC Comedy, but still targets viewers aged 25-49, now with content for mind, the heart and the funny bone.

Bluey remains the biggest series drawcard across all of television’s multichannels, premiering to 459,000 national viewers overnight, and then booming on iview.

ABC ME titles are drawing accolades from around the world, while ABC News has been a go-to destination for COVID-19 press conferences this year and news events such as protests, Inauguration, earthquake and Federal Budget.

ABC Kids | ABC TV Plus

Recent Success Stories : Australia’s #1 kids show Bluey continues to draw in huge numbers for the ABC. The premiere was watched by an overnight metro audience of 459k. While on ABC iview, in the week that followed, the Father’s Day special achieved the highest weekly BVOD audience for the year with 1.64M views. On broadcast TV, and ABC iview Play School specials continue to draw strong audiences. The Play School Silly Special had an overnight metro audience of 110k, while on ABC iview it achieved a VPM average of 117k. Tjitji Lullaby launched on ABC Kids in July, helping transition families to a quiet bedtime, while showcasing the rich and diverse Australian animals and land. The music and animation were produced by Australian Indigenous artists. The lullaby has had a great response and has been viewed on ABC iview more than 710K times since it first aired. Recently won a Gold for Best Use of Original Song Composition at the 2021 Promax ANZ Awards | ABC TV Plus launched on January 1st 2021 and delivered the channel’s highest share since 2014.  ABC TV Plus recorded a 4.1% overnight share on launch, which consolidated to 4.6% – the channel’s highest share since Christmas Day 2014. Launch movie Strictly Ballroom achieved a metro average audience of 195,000 – the highest program audience for the channel since 2017. Other top ABC TV Plus programs on broadcast include Auschwitz Untold: In Colour (metro average audience of 129,000), Louis Theroux: Selling Sex (107,000) and Louis Theroux: Surviving America’s Most Hated Family (104,000). Among ABC TV Plus programs on ABC iview, Louis Theroux documentaries rank highly, alongside comedies Bliss and Staged.  Bliss S1 achieved a VPM series average audience of 94,000, followed by Louis Therous: Shooting Joe Exotic (84,000), Louis Theroux: Life on the Edge (75,000) and Staged S2 (70,000).

ABC ME is also the home of ABC TV Education, providing longform educational content for students and teachers.

2021 Ratings Share / Demo Performance: On average ABC ME reaches 1.08 million Australians (6.1%) each week across the Five Capital Cities. ABC ME is the #4 channel for primary school aged kids (5-12) in Australia, and #3 for kids 7-12. Reach: ABC ME channel reaches 19.7% of children aged 5-12 or 348,000 across the 5 Capital Cities. Share: ABC ME channel has a daytime share of 13.0% for children aged 5-12.  Average daytime share among total people is 0.9%. The highest broadcast audience for ABC ME in 2021YTD is currently Doctor Who: Revolution of the Daleks (209k). Other top programs include Miraculous World: Shanghai, Lady Dragon (143k) and Shaun The Sheep: The Farmer’s Llamas (117k). ABC ME iview peak with a new monthly record of 164M plays in August. In what was another difficult year for the nation’s children, ABC TV Education proved a most valued asset for parents, students, and teachers alike. The online minutes viewed for ABC TV Education content has been on an upward trajectory since January and peaked with a record 1.66M minutes viewed per week during August. This is a huge uplift on 2020s peak of 930K minutes viewed. ABC ME will continue to focus efforts into providing free and accessible Education content for all Australian children in the years to come. First Day, ABC ME’s series about a transgender girl starting high school, is among our most globally awarded series winning an International Emmy Award, Rockie Award, Rose d-Or, KidScreen Award and GLAAD Media Award.

Recent Success Stories:  Driven by coverage of the earthquake in Victoria, the ABC NEWS channel achieved a daytime share of 14.4% on Wednesday 22nd This is the highest ever daytime share for the channel. This was also the peak day for live streams of the ABC NEWS channel on ABC iview this year. The NSW and Victorian COVID media conferences throughout July and August were a focus for audience engagement with the ABC NEWS channel. Broadcast average audience and ABC iview live stream plays for the channel both peaked at 11am-midday AEST in recent months. Several ABC NEWS programs achieved increases in broadcast audiences year-on-year in 2021, including Afternoon Briefing (+24%), News Breakfast (+22%), ABC 7pm National News (+17%), ABC News at Noon (+14%) and China Tonight (+4%). The Planet America Inauguration Special on 22nd January 2021 is the top program on broadcast for the year with a metro average audience of 264,000.  The Budget 2021 news specials had the highest audiences for the channel on ABC iview.

  1. ABC Me having to show educational content is probably due to some funding reason but heaven for forbid a tv channel dedicate itself entirely to kids entertainment

    1. The controller of ABC3 once said they ran it that way in an interview. ABC ME having the ABCs schools content is more about freeing up space on ABC TV than anything else. The edutainment content is entertaining, so counts as entertainment.
