54% share for Nine across marathon Men’s Final

A marathon Nadal v Medvedev match kept viewers on Nine until the early hours of Monday morning. 10's 'jungle' finishes low.

A marathon Australian Open has delivered huge audiences for Nine.

It took Rafael Nadal nearly 5.5hrs to topple Daniil Medvedev before an exuberant Rod Laver crowd, wrapping at 1:20am this morning.

The preliminary numbers indicate the bulk of the match drew 1.61m metro viewers with 1.06m watching the Presentation.

The real strength of the game is in Nine’s share for Sunday night, wiping the competition with a massive 54.4% share. That was triple anything offered by Seven and quadruple 10 at 15.6% and 13.0%, respectively.

I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here drew 576,000 metro viewers across the bulk of its finale, but rose to 617,000 for the moment Dylan Lewis was announced as winner. Always susceptible to the tennis final, those numbers were down on 2021’s 784,000 / 896,000 and the lowest finale across 8 seasons.

Elsewhere last night Seven News (960,000) beat Nine News (902,000) while the return of Vera (447,000) and Muster Dogs (421,000) faced stiff competition.

  1. I think many watched the tennis to see how long Nadal would hold up…
He has been on crutches until fairly recently and then had covid…
I watched it all and I don’t normally really watch tennis…but watched Ash also…although that was 2nd screen…
Yes…I will catch Vera on iview…..I have never watched I’m a Celeb.

  2. Interesting to compare the marathon of the mens final to the sprint of the womens final. Lower peak but solid ratings over 5 hours rather than 1.

As for I’m a Celeb – I guess it was over in time for the third set or so, although given how long these Aussie reality show episodes can be they surprised the “winner announcement” didn’t come after the conclusion of the final.

  3. And to think that number and share would’ve been even higher had Rafa been more competitive in one or both of the first couple of sets, quite a few today saying they switched off and got to bed. 1m metro these days is like the old 2m, so the figures this fortnight are nothing short of ‘one for the ages’.

  4. Why does channel 10 always take the risk of airing the finale of I’m a celeb on grand final night? They were pretty much screwed last night let alone if an aussie male is ever in the grand final.

  5. So according to John its the sheep that determines the ratings and what we are suppose to be watching, bur I agree with him ratings don’t mean a thing to me never have!

    1. Maybe sheep that follow Instagram influencers and other paid shills. 🙂 I’m sure TV networks wouldn’t be above using them to “start a conversation” to get ratings up on various programs.

  6. The Nadal-medvedev game was a fantastic Game to watch on 9. This reminded me of the Djokovic-Nadal Aus Open Final in 2012 on 7 where it ran for nearly 6 hours. Nadal played fantastic and overcame a 2-0 set deficit to win his 21st Grand Slam.
Would love to see the full replay of Nadal-Medvedev match on 9Now, but I believe that 9Now don’t upload full replays of tennis matches for free. TMK, Stan Sport has full replays of the Aus Open matches.

  7. I am beginning to wonder if ratings actually mean anything any more. They certainly have never meant anything to me, I only watch what I want to see, not what the sheep are watching.

My point is that I think ratings are now skewed. For example, I am a die hard Vera fan and hate tennis. However, if I was a tennis fan, I would have been able to watch the Final last night, knowing that I could watch Vera on Iview later on. I would not have had to make a choice. My view is that the ratings are only realistic to a degree when viewers have to choose between one program or another. That to me is a true indication of popularity.

As I said, just my view, right or wrong.

    1. Hi John, ratings are still important for advertising, planning, commissioning etc. but your point about watching later is valid and why OzTAM has moved to a Total TV figure which includes timeshifted, Live streaming and Regional numbers. Those figures are issued 7 days after broadcast, just check on any Ratings date older than 7 days to see a snapshot. You will see Programmer’s Wraps this week also talk a lot about BVOD numbers which reflect your point. So while Overnights are still important, they ren’t the full picture.

    2. As an advertiser I agree with “the ratings are only realistic to a degree when viewers have to choose between one program or another”. I don’t see my commercials anywhere in any of these programs in streaming/catch-up, BVOD or whatever, so, the only interest I have in these extra figures is to show me how many didn’t watch the program with my commercials in.

      1. To clarify – the only interest I have in these extra figures is to show me how many watched the program when it didn’t have my commercials in it, compared to how many watched the same program when it did have my commercials in it.
