‘Harold & Madge’ reunite, grateful for the gift of Neighbours.

Ian Smith & Anne Charleston are both sad at soap's outlook saying, "It looked after both of us."

Veteran Australian actors Ian Smith and Anne Charleston have reunited this morning as part of Studio 10‘s very own Neighbours week.

The much-loved stars, who became household names as Madge & Harold Bishop, said they were sad about the show’s possible ending after 37 years.

“That’s the word. It’s sad,” admitted Ian Smith.

“I mean, it has been 36 or 37 years I think, which is a record in this country. But still, I think it had a few good years left,” said Charleston.

Ian Smith continued, “I mean a lot of people hang a well-known commodity on soap. I would never do that. It did far too much for me. It made me well looked after in my senior years. It looked after both of us, didn’t it?”

“It certainly did. It opened doors that never would have been opened,” Charleston replied.

Both were also asked about nostalgic scenes including Harold’s disappearance, the death of Madge and the infamous ‘Bouncer’s Dream’ sequence.

Anne Charleston described the scene as “hitting rock bottom.”

While Ian Smith said ‘Bouncer’ was a very smart Labrador, Charleston noted, “It was a disgrace because he was a beautiful dog.

“He didn’t deserve a scene like that!”

  1. Thats show biz. All good things come to an end. Be lucky that cast and crew had a long employment which paid for their homes which wasnt the case in many a failed Aussie drama.
